Centers
Statement of Purpose
The purpose of the Learning Tree porgrams is to offer opportunities for chidren to access academic, enrichment, social and recreational experiences in an after-school environment that is safe, drug-free and supervised.
Statement of Goals
The Learning Tree program supports the following goals:
- To offer expanded academic enrichment to help children, particularly students who attend low-performing schools, meet state and local academic acchievement stadards in core academic subjects, such as reading, mathematics, and science.
- To offer students a broad array of additional services programs, and activities, such as you development activitites, drug and violence prevention programs, counseling programs, art, music, physical education/fitness programs, character education and technology education programs that are designed to reinforce and complement the regular academic program of participating students.
- To offer families of students served by community learning centers opportunities for literacy and related educations development.
Curently, 10 sites are funded by the Texas Education Agency's 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant (21st CCLC). This grant is a competitive, 5 year grant that is awarded to schools based on various factors such as percentage of economically disadvantaged students. The 21st CCLC grant prohibits any fees charged to students or families. Participation is limited to 100 students and is offered on a first-come, first- served basis.
Meadow Village ES, Linton ES, Villarreal ES, Mary Hull ES and Passmore ES will cease grant funding at the end of the 08-09 school year. Powell ES, Esparza ES, Glenn ES, Lackland ES and Westwood Terrace ES will cease grand funding at the end of the 10-11 school year.
Five Learning Tree sites are funded by the City of San Antonio After School Challenge funds: Rayburn MS, Ross MS, Jones MS, Cable ES and Valley Hi ES. This funding source requires tuition to be paid on an annual, sliding-scale basis.
Our newer additions to learning tree are Scarbourough ES, Forester ES and Carnahan ES. These sites receive no grant funding and are tuition-base.
