NORTHSIDE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT

Dear Community Members,

It’s hard to believe that the 2008-09 school year is about to come to an end. I am so proud of all the achievements and hard work of our students and staff this past year and hope that everyone gets a chance to relax a little bit this summer.

As I write this, the state Legislature still is in session and we have yet to know whether new laws will improve the state’s school finance and accountability systems.  I’m sure we’ll spend some time this summer figuring out how dozens of bills lawmakers pass will affect Northside.

I hope all of you will spend some time this summer taking a class through Northside’s Adult and Community Education department. The theme for this semester’s course offerings is “Renew, Recreate,” and there are lots of classes available to help you do just that.

From learning a new language to learning the ins and outs of computer software, I know you’ll be amazed by the incredible variety of courses that are offered. Remember, Adult and Community Education serves the entire community, whether you’ve got children in school or not.

It’s summertime, which means ACE has a huge selection of children’s programs including Rocket Camp, Magic Camp, Kinder Dance, Robotics using Legos, Rocky Pals - 3D Character Rock Painting, Cooking Camps, Game Design and Development, Babysitting, and even Knitting.

The fun isn’t just limited to children. There are plenty of options to get adults moving and learning, such as Dance, Computers, Languages, Cooking, Golf, Tennis, Gardening, and a slew of Do-It-Yourself classes.

This summer, we are offering classes at locations throughout the District, including Brandeis High School, NISD’s newest high school.

I wish everyone a happy and healthy summer and look forward to seeing you in the fall for the start of the 2009-10 school year.

Sincerely,

John M. Folks, Ed.D.
