YOUTH
PROGRAMS
K-12 students are served primarily through:
the Summer Youth Program, and the After School
Enrichment Program
Summer Youth Program
This program combines academics and recreation for elementary
and middle school youth and is operational on four to six Northside
campuses during the month of June. The "day camp" setting
gives students a chance to build on and go beyond learning from
the regular school year in their specific area of interest. Classes
include science, music, writing, computers, language, math, drama,
and sports.
Afternoon field trips take students off-campus to swimming, skating,
bowling, and other activities.
About 250 youth participate in the program each summer; it has
been operational since 1985.
After-School Enrichment
The After-School Enrichment program is now operating on 22 elementary
school campuses. One-hour classes are offered one or two days
a week. They include Spanish, sign language, arts, computers,
science, math, and drama. Children are given the opportunity to
pursue their own interests by enrolling in the class of their
choice.
The program was started in February, 1994, serving over 2500
children yearly in grades K-5.
Funding: Tuition-based and self-supporting.
After school care
After school care is in place at all Northside elementary
schools and is operated by the Northwest YMCA (Prime Time program),the
San Antonio Urban Ministries (ASK program), and City of San Antonio
Parks & Recreation (Challenge).
