Coach Howorth joined the NS 410 staff in the fall of
2006 as the Head Coach. He
grew up in
San Antonio
where he swam with AAAA and
Jay
High School
. While at Jay he was a UIL
State medalist in what many say was the greatest race in the history of
Texas High School Swimming (1992 boys' 200im), a many time All-American
and current record holder at Jay.
Coach Howorth continued his swimming career at the
University
of
Texas
where he was a 6-time
All-American
,
US
Olympic Trials Qualifier, and a member of the UT National Championship
Team in 1996. While at
Texas
he earned his degree in Applied Learning and Development/Sport Management
and was on the Dean’s List.
After college, Derek began coaching as the Head Coach of the Florida
Aquatic Swim Club (the club team for the
University
of
Florida
). From there he moved to the Highlander Aquatic Club in
Orlando
, before returning home to
Texas
as the Associate Head Coach of the famed Cy-Fair Fleet.
During his time coaching Derek has developed over 20, National Top
16 swimmers, served as the Chair of the Texas Age Group Swimming
Committee, been named Gulf Swimming Age Group Coach of the Year in 2005
& 2006, and named TSA Age Group Coach of the Year in 2006.
During his free time Derek enjoys cooking, cycling, and being outdoors.
Coach Howorth enjoys coaching because it allows him to help kids learn
life lessons through the sport of swimming. |
