NISD's Bilingual/ESL Department is proud to announce that NISD is a recipient of the Limited English Proficient Student Success Initiative (LEPSSI) Grant. The grant's goals are to increase LEP students' academic achievement and increase the number of teachers who are prepared to enable LEP students to meet state performance standards.
The grant's strategies include:
- implement a newcomer program at District middle schools and high schools
- provide summer school
- provide supplemental materials for teachers
- implement a tutoring program for middle school students
- create linguistic units that can be used by content area teachers
- increase involvement of parents of LEP students
- provide professional development for core subject teachers, Newcomer team teachers, counselors, and administrators
