2009 Bluebonnet Winner:
One Potato, Two Potato
by Cynthia DeFelice

The Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA) reading program was established in 1979 by the Texas Library Association. Each year, the Bluebonnet Committe creates a list of 20 nominated children's books for students in 3rd - 6th grades. At Blattman, students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades are encouraged to participate in this program. Students who read at least 5 of the 20 books will be eligible to vote in January for their favorite title. The book receiving the most votes statewide will receive the Texas Bluebonnet Award.

Blattman students who take and pass an Accelerated Reader Quiz (with at least 70% - 3 out of 5 questions correct or 7 out of 10 questions correct) on their grade level goal will also be eligible to participate in the Bluebonnet Luncheon provided by PTA in the spring. Third grade will need to read at least 6 of the books and pass 6 quizzes. Fourth grade will have to read at least 7 books and pass the quizzes, and Fifth grade your goal is at least 8. These students will receive a special Bluebonnet Reader tag, a certificate, and recognition on end-of-year awards.

The current Bluebonnet Books are kept on a special white shelf decorated with bluebonnets. Because of high demand, these books are available for check out only by students and teachers in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes. Check out is limited to one Bluebonnet Book only.
