TAKS FAQ's

What is the TAKS test?

TAKS stands for "Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills."  The TAKS test is administered to all Texas students in grades 3-12.  Various subjects are tested each year in order to ensure that the students are learning the appropriate skills that the state has outlined in the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills).  Tests are given at various times throughout the spring semester at the elementary level (testing dates for your child's grade level are given below).

Is the test timed?

No, students have all of the time that they need on the day of the test.  If they do not finish the test by the end of the school day, arrangements will be made for your child to continue the test at school.  You will be notified when your child is finished and ready to be picked up.

How can I help my child?

Neither teachers nor parents are not allowed to help their child on the day of the test.  However, you can help your child with homework and classwork throughout the year in order to ensure that they are acquiring the skills needed to take the test.  You can also help your child on the day of the test by doing the following:

  • Make sure that they get plenty of sleep the night before.
  • Make sure that they eat a good, healthy breakfast the morning of the test - brain food only - no junk food!
  • Send a good, healthy lunch and snack if your child brings those items to school.
  • Speak to your child about the importance of the test and doing their best.  At the same time, tell your child that you believe in them and that they can do it!
  • At the end of the day, tell your child that you are proud of them for working hard and trying their best.

What will my child need to take the test?

Your child will be provided with the test booklet and answer sheet.  However, your child will also need the following items in order to take the test:

  • At least 2, #2 pencils with erasers
  • Highlighter (4th grade and up)
  • A library book to read when they are finished testing

The following items are optional, but are often helpful for students to have.

  • Separate eraser

What if my child fails the test?

Test scores are placed in your child's permanent folder and are looked at in order to determine whether your child will need additional services such as tutoring and summer school. There are some tests that your child MUST pass in order to be promoted to the next grade level. If your child does fail one of these tests, your child will be given extensive remediation and be allowed to retake the test up to two more times.  The following are tests that your child MUST pass in order to be promoted to the next grade level at the elementary level:

  • 3rd grade reading
  • 5th grade math
  • 5th grade reading

What if my child is absent on the day of the TAKS test?

If your child misses the reading or math test, they will be required to take the test on the next state mandated retest day.
