Mentor Program

Students need models to help them envision a quality life for themselves, one based on using their educational opportunities to achieve a career of interest. Studies over the last decade have shown that young people with mentors were more likely to achieve and aspire to better grades, go to college, be hopeful about their future, and exhibit improved relationships with peers and adults.

In Business Careers' mentor program, students are paired up with individuals in the workforce (notable business and finance) that can relate personality-wise and by life goals. Student's are able to learn from members of society about real world experiences and outside issues. The mentor program takes place at least twice a month during lunch time where student's meet with their mentor to discuss experiences. For the course of the year, the mentor usually brings lunch for the mentee. The program ends each year with a banquet to thank the mentors for their time. This event takes place in May, usually at Oak Hills Country Club, where the student offers to pay for the mentor's meal in honor of their experiences. The mentor program aims to provide opportunities for students to gain exposure to new jobs and careers.

Job Fair Program

Approximately 50 students were selected to participate in the 2008 annual job fair by submitting their resumes to prospective employers, and were interviewed by company representatives.  The Summer Internship program began in the summer of 1992 with 12 students employed.  The program has consistently grown with companies such as Wells Fargo, HEB, InfoNXX, QVC, SeaWorld, Fiesta Texas, and Northside ISD all looking for Business Careers students to fill their employment needs.  One difference in this year’s job fair compared to previous years was that the students had the opportunity to complete the job applications online using their district issued laptop computers.  The laptop initiative which started in 2006 has continued to grow and provide educational benefits for our students.  Due to the online application process, some of the students received immediate responses to their application.  It was an excellent lesson in how the digital age can affect all of us.  The BCHS internship program is another “extra” advantage that Business Careers students have to meet with community partners and gain invaluable work experience while earning top wages for their effort.  This year’s job fair was a huge success!

Job Shadowing

Every year students participate in the Junior Achievement Job Shadow program. Companies in the San Antonio area invite Business Careers High School students to join them at their place of business for a ½ day. The students are selected to participate in Junior Achievement’s Job Shadow program. Each student will be matched with an employee of a business where they will gain job site experience and get a real world experience. Our students enthusiastically praise the program and tend to feel it was very beneficial to them.
