ENTRANCE EXAMS

The tests primarily used for college admission are the SAT and ACT. The test scores along with your high school records are used to evaluate your level of academic knowledge.


SAT
The Scholastic Aptitude Test consists of two tests. The SAT-I is used as an entrance exam; the SAT-II is equivalent to a placement test in a particular subject.
NEW SAT
The SAT-1 measures verbal, math skills and writing.
The verbal section consists of analogies, sentence completions and critical reading.
The math section tests arithmetic, algebraic, and geometric reasoning.
A perfect score is 2400.

ACT
The American College Testing (ACT) program evaluates English, math, reading and science skills. Optional Writing Test. Information may be obtained at http://www.act.org
The English test assesses punctuation, grammar and usage, sentence structure, strategy, organization, and style.
The math portion covers pre-algebra, coordinate and plane geometry, and trigonometry.
A perfect is 36-the national average is 21.

Cost of the test is $24 and is offered six times per year.

THEA
The Texas Academic Skills test if you plan to attend a public college or university in Texas.
The THEA measures reading, math, and writing skills.
The test is designed to ensure that students have the academic skills to perform effectively in college.
You may be exempt from the THEA if your:
SAT-I score is at least a 1070, requiring a minimum of 500 verbal and 500 math.
ACT score is a composite of 23, requiring a minimum of 19 in English and
19 in math.
The cost of the test is $29.

Advanced Placement Tests
The Advanced Placement (AP) Program consists of 32 college-level courses.
It is possible to receive college credits if you earn a certain score on the AP exams. (Each college course is different.)
Register for the AP exams in late March.
All Advanced Placement (AP) exams are administered only during the national tests dates every year in May.

PSAT/NMSQT
The Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test/National Merit Qualifying test uses the same format as the SAT-I and/or for a practice.
Sophomores may take the PSAT.
Juniors are strongly encouraged to take the test.
It is administered on a national test date every year in October.
Register in September in the career center.
The cost is about $12.
Some fee waivers are available for juniors only.
National Merit Semi-Finalists are named based upon their junior PSAT score.
The National Hispanic scholars are named based upon their junior PSAT score.
