GENETICS DISORDER PROJECT

 Approved Websites to Use

Your Genetic Disorder: ________________________________________

You and your partner will be responsible for researching and presenting a 3-5 minute PowerPoint presentation on the disorder that is assigned to you.  The two of you will be required to do comparable work (meaning the same amount).  The project will be a test grade, but each of the 3 days we work on the project in class you will each receive daily participation grades.  Part of the test grade will also include how much you contributed to the project.  In other words, not helping with the project will not only get you a low test grade, but also 3 low daily grades.

In your power point slides you must include the following information in order on each slide and in the format described below – use this list as a checklist:

(Divide the 8 slides in half – 4 for each partner to work on and then you can merge your 2 PowerPoints on the last day)

Slide 1:

q       Title Page (Name of the disorder and you and your partners’ names) – 3 points

Slide 2:

q       General description of the disorder (no longer than 1 sentence).  – 7 points

Slide 3:

q       Symptoms/Problems people face with this disorder – 7 points

Slide 4:

q       Known causes of the disorder – How is it inherited? (Is it recessive, dominant, sex-linked, etc.)? – 7 points

Slide 5:

q       Who typically gets this disorder (certain age group, certain gender, certain race/ethnic group) or can anyone get it? – 7 pts.

Slide 6:

q       How often does the disorder occur You might find information that tells you it is rare or frequent….or you might find information that tells you specifically how often such as “1/25,000 births”)? – 3 points

Slide 7:

q       Are there any known treatments/cures for the disorder that can improve their quality of life? – 7 pts.

Slide 8:

q       Source Page (must have 3 sources –3 Internet sources will do – just copy and paste all the websites you used for your presentation in a bulleted list) – 7 points

Found throughout the presentation:

o       2 Pictures of people with the disorder (Some disorders don’t have pictures of a person.  Instead, find 2 pictures of something else that deals with the disorder.) These should be added throughout your presentation where appropriate– 20 points

Other Suggestions/Hints:

v     You  will be graded only on the information in your PowerPoint and how well it is presented.

v     All of the information in your presentation (on the PowerPoint and information you tell the class) must be in a simple language that you and everyone in the class can understand – do not use any words you don’t know how to pronounce; do not copy straight out of internet sources – put everything in your own words!

v     Divide the work evenly between both people in the group!

v     Make sure you choose a professional looking font that is easy to read!

v     To begin your presentation do not choose any background or add animation.  Only when you and your partner have merged can you then add a background and animation IF YOU HAVE TIME!  Fancy backgrounds and animations are not a requirement to do well on the project.

v     Presentations will begin the 3rd day we are in the computer lab and will finish the day after we leave the computer lab– if you are asked to present and you are not ready you will lose points!

v    Once you have your basic presentation in place and have merged with your partner, use animation, different fonts, colors, etc. to spice it up!

The following is how the project will be graded, so take this into consideration when putting together your presentation:

  1. Participation (over the 3 days)-------------------------------------------10 points
  2. Clarity of Presentation (Appropriate level & language)---------12 points
  3. Quality of Presentation (Grammar, spelling, layout)------------10 points

  5. Covering 6 main parts @ 7 points each------------------------------42 points
  6. Covering 2 little parts @ 3 points each--------------------------------6 points

Test Grade            100 points
