TOPIC:  Edgar Allan Poe

CONTENT OBJECTIVE(S)
 

    1. The student will study Poe's background
    2. The student will study the poems "Annabel Lee and The Raven"
    3. The student will study the short story "The Masque of the Red Death."
    4. The student will use the internet to answer questions about content and terms.
    5. The student will make and present a PowerPoint presentation.
SUBJECT AREA TEKS:
(2) Writing/writing processes. The student uses recursive writing processes when appropriate.(E) use technology for aspects of creating, revising, editing, and publishing texts.

LESSON PROCEDURE

A. Divide class into 6 groups of 5 or so.

B. Assign each group a specific assignment.

  1. Personal background of Edgar Allan Poe
  2. Writing, works, & Gothic tradition
  3. Themes
  4. "The Masque of the Red Death" – masks, masked balls, & Black Death
  5. "Annabel Lee" - alliteration, wife Virginia, purpose of rhyme and rhythm
  6. "The Raven" – poetry terms such as symbolism, tone, and setting
C. Each group will research the assigned topic using the hot list.
D. Each group will make and present a PowerPoint presentation.

ASSESSMENT:

    1. Did the student have accurate information?
    2. Did the student have enough information?
    3. Did the student analyze the information?
    4. Did the student create an accurate and interesting end product?
    5. Did the student have appropriate documentation?
