Photo Editing
    READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION AND PRACTICE WITH A PICTURE FILE OF YOUR CHOICE

    The directions for photo editing given in this tutorial are based on using Microsoft Photo Editor.  This photo editor is available on all northside campus, and you may have access to it in the multipurpose lab on your campus.  You may use any other photo editor that you have access to such as:

    Adobe PhotoDeluxe
    Adobe Photoshop 4-5
    Corel PhotoPaint 7-9
    Fractal Design Painter 5.0
    PaintShop Pro 5-6
    Ulead iPhoto Express
    Ulead PhotoImpact

    MICROSOFT PHOTO EDITOR

    Photo Editor is part of the Office 97 suite.  If Office 97 was completely installed, you will have this program on your machine.  If you do not have Office 97, you can use any other editor to edit images.  The following directions are for Microsoft Photo Editor:

    1. Start Photo Editor
      • Click on Start
      • Move up to Programs
      • Locate Microsoft Photo Editor
      • Click on Microsoft Photo Editor
    2. Open your file by clicking on File and selecting Open
    3. Locate your file and double click on it.
  • When it Opens, if you want to crop the picture go to the Select icon
    and click on the select symbol (looks like a small box). Draw a box around the main part of your picture. You are trying to make your picture smaller by cutting (cropping) off the extra space around it. After you have selected part of the picture inside the box, go to Image, then go to Crop. Click on the word Crop.  Then Click OK. Your picture should be smaller. (If something goes wrong and your picture disappears or looks bad, immediately click on Edit, then click on Undo. This will bring your picture back.)
  • You can also Resize your picture. To move one side of the image, move the pointer over the sizing handle on that side until the pointer changes to a double-headed arrow, and then drag the handle.To change the height and width simultaneously, drag a corner handle. OR (Click on Image, select Resize, choose a size, click OK.) (If something goes wrong and your picture looks very bad, immediately click on Edit, then click on Undo. This will bring your picture back.)

  • OTHER OPTIONS:
    PREVIEW/CROP BEFORE OPENING

    1. On the Standard toolbar, click Open.
    2. Locate the image you want to preview, and select it.
    3. Click Preview.
    4. To crop the image before opening it, drag the edges of the selection frame in the preview window.
    5. To resize the image before opening it, drag any corner of the selection frame in the preview window.
    6. To accept the image as modified and close the preview window, click OK.
    7. To close the preview window without changing the image, click Cancel.
    8. To return the selection frame to the original margins, click Reset.
    9. To open the image as cropped or resized, click OK.


    ROTATING AN IMAGE

    1. To rotate an image 90 degrees clockwise:
    2. Click Rotate 90º on the Standard toolbar.
    3. OR
    4. On the Image menu, click Rotate.
    5. Choose the options you want.
    6. If you select Arbitrary Angle, enter the number of degrees of rotation you want in the Angle box, and click the clockwise or counterclockwise option.


    SMUDGE

    1. The Smudge Brush smears or blends adjacent colors as the brush is dragged across the image.
    2. On the Standard toolbar, click Smudge .
    3. Drag the pointer over the area you want to smudge.


    SHARPEN

    1. The Sharpen Brush increases the difference between adjacent gray values as the brush is dragged across the image.
    2. On the Standard toolbar, click Sharpen.
    3. Drag the pointer over the area you want to sharpen.


    TRANSPARENT BACKGROUNDS
    There are times when the background color of an image should be transparent.  When the image is used on a web page or in PowerPoint, the image will have the background of the web page or the slide.

    On the Standard toolbar, click Set Transparent Color .
    1. Position the tool over the color you want to make transparent, and click.
    2. The Change Color to Transparent box appears.

    3. The preview window shows the color that will change to transparent. You can modify the options to increase the range of colors that will become transparent or to change the degree of transparency.
    Microsoft Photo Editor supports three file formats that save transparency: GIF, TIFF, and PNG.  Your image will have to be saved in one of those formats.

    BRIGHTNESS
    The Brightness control allows you to change the amount of white in all colors.

    1. On the Standard toolbar, click Image Balance.
    2. Drag the Brightness control to increase (100) or decrease (0) the brightness.
    3. To adjust all colors, select All Colors in the lower-left list before dragging the slider. To adjust the color channels separately, select Red, Green, or Blue.


    CONTRAST

    The Contrast control allows you to change the difference between all colors.
    1. On the Standard toolbar, click Image Balance.
    2. Drag the Contrast control to increase (90) or decrease (0) the contrast.
    3. To adjust all colors, select All Colors in the lower-left corner. To adjust the colors separately, select Red, Green, or Blue.
