Asynchronous - In distance education,
an event where all participants are not logged on at the same time
Bandwidth - The transmission
capacity of a network; describes how much data can be transferred at
one time
Chat forum/room - A place
where two or more participants can log on simultaneously and exchange
messages (usually text) with each other in real-time
Cyberspace - Another name
for the Internet
Cyberstress - Frustration
as a result of participating in online courses
Distance education - Education
that takes place when a teacher and student are separated by physical
distance and technology is used to bridge the gap
Instructional design -
In distance education, the application of multiple instructional strategies
and consideration of multiple learning styles when developing courses
Interface design - In
online courses, the ease of navigation, balanced, predictable structure
and uniform appearance of the site
Internet - A worldwide
network that includes the World Wide Web, e-mail, File Transfer Protocols,
threaded discussions, electronic databases, etc.
Internet Activity Structures
- Web pages that focus learning, including hotlists, subject samplers,
multimedia scrapbooks, treasure hunts, and Webquests
Intranet - A World Wide
Web-like network that is available only to people working inside an
organization
Learning styles - Describes
the way individuals learn best, including hands-on, aurally, visually,
etc.
Multimedia - Integration
of several forms of media, such as text, graphics, animations, video,
sound, etc.; all media can be categorized as voice, video, data, or
print
Net Generation - Young
people born in or after 1980, most of whom have grown up surrounded
by technology
Online courses - In distance
education, courses that are primarily Web-based
Streaming media - Audio
or video that begins to play on your computer before it is entirely
downloaded
Synchronous - In distance
education, an event in which all participants are logged in at the same
time; occurs simultaneously, in real-time, in different locations
Threaded discussion - A
"bulletin board" concept for e-mail messages; messages can
be sorted according to replies/responses
Videoconference - One-way,
two-way, or multi-way transmission of live video via satellite, Internet,
or intranet. If on the Internet, streaming media formats would most
likely be used.
