"What you see is what you get!" has enormous implications in the digital age. Mary Alice White, a researcher at Columbia Teacher's College, has found that today's students learn ("get") more than half of what they know from visual information.

Visual literacy is one of the six types of digital-age literacy that students need for the 21st century. Visual Literacy is defined as the ability to decipher, interpret, and express ideas using images, graphics, photos, drawings, charts, graphs, animations and video. It is no longer enough to be able to read and write. Today's students must learn to process both words and graphics. They must be able to move easily between text and images, between literal and figurative environments. Today's students must be able to decode, analyze, evaluate, and produce communication in a variety of forms.
