Learning Objectives: Students will read and study the classic American novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, and participate in various technology-based activities to guide their understanding. Activities will include: an Internet treasure hunt to help build background knowledge prior to reading; webbing via Inspiration, which includes: character web, comparison web, and literary web; viewing and analyzing clips from the movie To Kill A Mockingbird as a means of comparing and contrasting the movie with the novel; and the creation and presentation of group Powerpoint projects as a culminating activity related to the novel's themes.
Student Activity 1: Students will complete Scout's World: Searching for Clues - An Internet Treasure Hunt to help build background knowledge prior to reading. Students will work in the computer lab for three 50-minute periods to complete the treasure hunt. Students will record their answers on a handout, which includes the questions.
Student Assessment: Teacher observation related to on-task behavior in lab; standardized assessment on correct/incorrect answers to handout (quality of The Big Question could be factored into handout score, but The Big Question has no right or wrong answer).

Student Activity 2:After reading the first several chapters of the novel (teacher's discretion dependent upon needs of students), students will work in computer lab for two 50-minute periods to complete an Inspiration web of their choice. They select one of the following templates to complete over the novel: character web, comparison web, or literary web.

Student Activity 3:Students will view and analyze clips from the movie To Kill A Mockingbird to compare and contrast the movie with the novel. Viewing will take one to two 50-minute class periods, and analyzing/writing will take three to five 50-minute class periods. This activity should be completed near the end of the book. Students will pick key events and characters from the story to compare and contrast. They should also be expected to determine the effectiveness of the director's interpretation of the story and be able to support their argument.

Student Activity 4:Students will work in groups of three to four to produce a Powerpoint project as a culminating activity to the To Kill A Mockingbird unit. This activity will take approximately five to seven 50-minute periods for planning, creation and presentation of the Powerpoint project. Students will be working in the computer lab for part of this project. Students will be expected to thoroughly explore one of the themes in the novel and present their ideas to the class via Powerpoint.
