TEACHER'S LESSON PLAN
Performance Standrards: IV. C. Describe marine animal adaptations and behavior.
Essential Skills: IV. C. Describe adaptations of marine animals. Observe, identify, and record patterns of animals in the ocean. Distinguish between inherited and learned traits.
Learning Objectives: The students will understand the interactions and adaptations (specific to the killer whale) within the ocean system.
Student Activity 1: Class will make predictions about characteristics of killer whales including: physical, behavioral, etc. Then, the teacher will read the book listed below to the class. Class will demonstrate recall of factual information and answer "wh" questions about killer whales.

Student Activity 2:Small groups will explore Yahooligans (with teahcer monitoring) to locate internet sites that contain additional information about killer whales. Student pairs will launch websites listed below to complete Killer Whale Subject Sampler.

Student Activity 3:Complete hearing experiment to investigate the hearing range of killer whales. Materials: dog whistle, bell, metal clicker, bike horn, two plastic soda bottles. Students will hypothesize which will be easiest/most difficult to hear. Have students make a noise with each and discuss how it sounds. Ask: Which noises were easiest to hear? Which were most difficult? Compare with their hypotheses.

Student Activity 4:Students will orally present information learned about killer whales from one of the following topics: babies, predators, physical characteristics, habitats, and body parts.
