Six tons of food donated to SA Food Bank.

Clark HS ROTC cadets donated 12,573
pounds or 6.28 tons of food to the San Antonio
Food Bank this year. This is two tons more than
last year.

Westwood Terrace students open hearts and piggy banks.
The Westwood Terrace ES Student Council held a fundraiser called “Feathers for Turkeys,” allowing students to donate a quarter to purchase a feather to be placed on a turkey in each classroom. Approximately 3,650 feathers were sold resulting in a total of $912 raised. The money was used to put together Thanksgiving baskets of food (including turkeys) for school families. Teachers Lizeth Yates and Katherine Mendoza are Student Council sponsors

Calling all tubas and baritone players!
The NISD Fine Arts department presents the ninth annual “A Merry Tuba Christmas” open to all tuba and baritone players of NISD middle and high
school bands. The concert will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at Zachry
MS
beginning at 7 p.m. Rehearsal time is 5:30 p.m. in the Zachry band hall. Performers are asked to wear their band shirt and Santa hat. Fernandez ES turns 15.
Raul Fernandez ES turns 15 this year, and the school celebrated by dedicating a new outdoor classroom built by the grand-nephew of the school’s namesake. The “Learning Tree” Outdoor Classroom includes a wooden deck with benches under a huge live oak, providing a wonderful setting for teachers and students to enjoy outside instruction for years to come. In addition, the Fernandez family donated a sculpture depicting a child boosting his sister in order to grasp an apple.

Income tax filing help offered.
Ross MS will host the Volunteer Income-tax Assistance (VITA) program to assist employees and Ross families and community members with their tax forms starting Jan 19 from 4:30-9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Last year, VITA resulted in $1,848,182 in refunds, with an average refund of $2,018. Earn money for an NISD school while you eat.
During the month of December, when you present your employee card and eat at the Eclipse Café (14439 N.W. Military Hwy. Suite 100 @ Huebner Road), 10% of your total food bill (excluding alcohol, tax and gratuity) will be donated back to Rawlinson MS to fund the Friday Forum program!

Jose Luis Nunez placed first in the high school division in this year’s San Antonio Poetry Fair’s anthology, “Voices Along the River.” Nunez is a student at Business Careers HS. Angela Santana, a Communications Arts HS student, received Honorable Mention for her poem “Casual Art Enthusiast.”

Jose Perez, a teacher at Jones MS, received a grant for $2500 from the Jordan Fundamentals Grant Program. The grant will be used for his students to design their own house floor plan, which will come to life through 3-D home kits. During this process, they will be analyzing the cost, square footage and scale factor.

The O’Connor HS band drumline placed first in the Marching Percussion Category in the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) competition. They were also named Outstanding Snare Line, Outstanding Bass Line, Outstanding Tenor Line and Outstanding Cymbal Line. PASIC is the World’s largest Percussion Convention and gathering of teachers, exhibits and workshops. Associate Band Director George Garza designed and wrote the award winning show.
