NISD's 2005-2006 Pillars of Character
NOTE:  In this and subsequent editions of Inside Northside, you will meet this year’s Pillars of Character, each a successful Northside HS graduate with a story to tell.

Alvarado is the 2005 Pillar of Fairness

Tourists along the San Antonio Riverwalk often stop to admire the mosaic tile picture of Texas hero and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence Jose Antonio Navarro.  Little do they realize that the artist is Navarro’s great, great, great Grandson Oscar Alvarado, 2005 Pillar of Fairness.

A member of the first graduating class of Clark HS in 1980,his mosaics decorate more than a dozen bridges on the Riverwalk. He is one of the founders of First Friday (King William Arts Festival) and has served twice as the Chairman of Art-in-the-Hood, a Southtown Urban Main Street initiative. Alvarado creates colorful, whimsical larger-than-life sculptures and murals in his South Presa studio, “The Studio at PW-16.” He is a featured artist on the PBS-TV series, “Modern Masters,” and works on commissions all over the United States.

After receiving a business degree from UTSA he invested his Salesman-of-the-Year commission from a previous job in purchasing in two Vintage Clothing Stores in San Antonio called Time Zone and began creating art. He also began using his sales skills as a political activist lobbying City Hall on behalf of “The Arts” in San Antonio.

He is a featured artist in the PBS Modern Masters series and is currently creating colorful, whimsical, larger-than-life sculptures from here to Washington, D.C.  As a Pillar, he has promised Northside students and the District’s visual and fine arts teachers that he will help them create their own artistic legacy in our schools.
