Esparza teacher
among best in Texas

Leija is a teacher who leads by example. Throughout the year, he gives countless hours, before and after school, to help students who are struggling in math and reading. The results can be seen in their test scores when his entire class mastered the District’s multiplication assessment two months earlier than the rest of the grade level, and then went on to tackle multiplication and division concepts usually introduced at the fifth and sixth grade levels.

He has also initiated an after-school science club for students interested in space giving them an opportunity to learn the principles of flight and aerodynamics through hands-on activities.

Begun in 2004, the U.S. Department of Education’s American Stars of Teaching awards focus attention on exemplary classroom teachers who are successful in raising student academic achievement for all of their students—often through the use of innovative classroom strategies. These teachers serve as representatives of the thousands of teachers who, regardless of the challenges they face, are making a difference in the lives of their students.

Please help our military patients
in Iraq
Deadline: Dec. 16

Robert (Ham) Hamilton is safely home in San Antonio working as a mechanic/technician at the South Transportation Bus Station. Not too long ago, he was stationed in Iraq at the heliport/hospital facility.

Knowing the needs of the hospital through Hamilton, the NISD Transportation Dept. is holding a donation drive for the patients in the hospitals. Most needed items are new socks, new pajamas, new underwear and new lightweight robes. Items must be new and wrapped in their original packaging because of the threat of infection.

Deliver items to the main Transportation Office on Leslie Road (397-0939) care of Ray Turner, before Dec. 16. All donations will be sent via a direct
C-141 flight to the Commander of the Heliport-Hospital base in Iraq.
