Students learn about
early days in San Antonio
A docent at Mission San Juan shows Raba ES students tools used to prepare food back in the 1850s.

Fourth grade students from Carlos Coon, Cody, Raba, Oak Hills Terrace, Leon Valley, and Westwood Terrace elementary schools participated in the San Antonio Conservation Society’s “Heritage Education Tours” recently.

On the day that Raba and Carlos Coon ES students attended, they visited the Navarro house, Fort Sam Houston, Mission San Jose, Spanish Governor’s Palace, the Alamo, La Villita, Yturri-Edmunds Historical Site, Mission Concepcion, Mission Espada, and Mission San Juan. Re-enactors
in full costume were at several of
the stops.

Buffalo Soldiers dressed in civil war clothing, and volunteers dressed in 1850s garb cooking in the old fashioned kitchen and making adobe bricks were just some examples of the living history that students were able to see in order to give them a peak into what life in San Antonio over 150 years ago was like.

The San Antonio Conservation Society has conducted “Heritage Education Tours” for both public and private school students on a rotating basis for the past 49 years.

NISD Trustees serve selflessly

January ’05: School Board Recognition Month

January is School Board Recognition Month and Northside Independent School Districtis joining other districts across the state to gratefully acknowledge the invaluable contributions trustees make to their communities.

“Volunteer school board members serve countless hours working to improve public education,” said NISD Superintendent Dr. John Folks.

“School trustees have a tremendous responsibility preparing today’s students- and tomorrow’s leaders- for productive roles in our society.  School board members are the voices of their communities, serving first and foremost in the best interest of our schoolchildren,” said Folks.

“We proudly join educators and community members in saluting these education advocates as they provide leadership for student achievement, academic programs, district funding, and school facilities. Their service ensures that decisions about local public schools are made by those most familiar with the needs of the community’s children and families,” said Folks.  “These individuals deserve recognition and thanks for their commitment and dedication to the continuing success of our students and schools.

Serving on the NISD Board are:
Randall H. (Randy) Fields, District 6, President; Lynn Britton, Jr., District 1, Vice President; Annie L. Holmes, District 2, Secretary; M’Lissa M. Chumbley, District 3; Robert (Bobby) Blount, Jr., District 4; Katie N. Reed, District 5; and Karen Freeman, District 7.
