Students salute our veterans

Students in Northside ISD celebrated freedom and democracy throughout the week, with culminating activities on Veterans’ Day, Nov. 11. Below is a sampling of some of the activities at various schools. Many schools held early morning flagpole ceremonies. (Due to space constraints, not all schools and/or their special programs are listed.)
- Each day at Mary Hull ES, the official song of a different branch of the military was played during the daily broadcast asking staff and students to reflect on the sacrifices for our freedom by service men and women in the corresponding branch with the song played. Students made “We Are Thankful for Veterans” cards to be delivered to the Audie Murphy Veterans’ Hospital in time for Thanksgiving.
- On Friday, Knowlton ES began the day with a Kindergarten and first grade Flag Parade through the hallways of the school. The school planned programs for the different grade levels consisting of the Taft HS Color Guard and drill team performances, special guest speakers, and the singing of various patriotic songs.
- Steubing ES had a theme each day and dressed according to the theme. Monday was “Stars and Stripes Day,” Tuesday was “United States Day,” Wednesday was “Patriotic from Head to Toe Day,” Thursday was their Spirit Day, and they wore red, white and blue on Friday. Their Veterans’ Day program included a skit, songs by the choir, and a live eagle from The Birds of Prey. Veterans were invited to a reception following the ceremony.
- At Michael ES, students wrote letters to veterans and current military personnel, wore yellow as a show of support, and made posters, flags, murals and pictures to hang in the hallways. On Friday, they held a school-wide flag raising ceremony in the front of the building.
- Glenoaks ES students brought pictures of family member serving in the military to post on a special Bulletin Board. Veterans were invited to participate in an assembly honoring them, and each grade level made something during the week as a special presentation of appreciation during the assembly: Kindergarten students made wreaths and flags to present to the veterans present; first and second grade students sang a patriotic song; third graders performed a patriotic skit; and the fourth and fifth graders wrote essays on freedom.
- Kindergarten students at Meadow Village ES made handprint flags to be displayed in the cafeteria windows. First grade students decorated the outside of the school with streamers around the trees, and second graders made them posters to display. Third through fifth grade students made thank you cards that were taken to the local American Legion and VFW associations. They were also encouraged to “bring a veteran” to breakfast and to bring stars with a veteran family members name to display in the cafeteria.
