Mardi Gras under the stars. Students in the Jay HS Creative Arts programs will hold “Mardi Gras Under the Stars,” an evening of fine entertainment and exquisite Cajun/Creole cooking on Friday, Feb. 4, from 6-9 pm. Jazz music, vocal performances, dramatic performances, and much food will be a treat for all who attend. Pre-sale tickets are $5 and tickets are $7 at the door, and includes gifts of Mardi Gras beads and chocolate coins for all attendees. Wall of Fame. As part of its newly launched Employee Recognition Program, Technology Services announced the first quarter 2004-05 individual and team award recipients. Honorees receive certificates and are recognized via the Technology Services website, the "Wall of Fame" at NLC Building D, and an e-mail to all Technology Services staff.
Reading for others. The students in Kathi Murphy-Burton’s second grade class at Oak Hills Terrace ES met their goal of reading 100 books in the Classroom Care Program. This resulted in Scholastic Books donating 100 books to children in need.
Students helping others. Northside students were well represented at the Mental Health Association’s mental health day at Macy’s. Josh White and Nick Thacker, students at Marshall HS, provided musical entertainment; students from the Northside Children’s Center were offered VIP passes to meet with gold-medal swimmer Ian Crocker who suffers from depression; and honor students from Rawlinson MS provided assistance.
Roundup training. Lori Gallegos, Principal at Villarreal ES, and students Daniel Corona (Sul Ross Learning Tree) and Esmeralda Avila (Rayburn Learning Tree) joined State Representative Joaquin Castro as the closing keynote speakers at the 2004 Fall After School Training Roundup. They spoke to over 500 conference attendees about the positive academic and enrichment opportunities they have experienced through the Learning Tree programs at their campuses.
Students helping students. NJHS students from Jordan MS visited two third grade classes at Evers ES as part of a community service project to spread their joy of reading to their younger peers. They arrived with books to read, placemats, and “Little Jaguars” tee-shirts. Jordan MS teachers Kim Sanchez and Susan Brogdon are NJHS sponsors.
