Texans helping Tsunami victims.Pat Neff MS students and staff collected over $3,200 for the Tsunami victims; and Mary Hull ES students collected $370 in a two-week period.

Esparza students shine before national audience. Two groups from Esparza ES performed at the National Association of Bilingual Educators (NABE) conference recently. Ballet Folklorica and Rondalla performed before the large audience. Fifty members of NABE visited the Esparza ES dual language program and, according to Principal Melva Matkin, “were impressed by the quality and instruction and level of Spanish spoken by both English and Spanish speakers.”

Trees for Texas Initiative takes root in Northside. Two NISD schools were selected to receive environmental-based educational software, curriculum training and historic tree saplings through the H-E-B “Trees for Texas” initiative. Stevenson MS and Connally MS will receive approximately $2,000 worth of software, as well as five historic tree saplings. Eliza Ramirez, Stevenson MS, and Ernestine Tina Carrola, Connally MS, are the coordinators for their respective campuses.

Get Fit with Bruce and Buddy. Thirty-three Brauchle ES students visited with San Antonio Spur Bruce Bowen and HEB Buddy as part of Bruce Bowen’s “Get Fit with Bruce and Buddy” program. The program awards students in Bexar County with Spurs tickets, lunch bags, tee-shirts and certificates for making sound choices when it comes to nutrition and fitness, according to counselor Priscilla Paul.


Tech Turning Point. Sylvia Wade, principal of Pat Neff MS, and Patricia Moore, vice principal at Carlos Coon ES, work with Doug Shudde, coordinator/specialist in Academic Technology Services, during a “Technology Turning Points” session, a series of training sessions developed to assist Campus and District administers to use technology more effectively. The sessions focus on leadership and vision, learning and teaching, productivity and professional practice, support, management and operations, assessment and evaluation, and social, legal and ethical issues.

Tsunami relief.
The cadets of the TX-882nd AFJROTC unit at Taft HS collected over $2,600 to help the Tsunami victims by collecting donations over the weekend at the local Wal Mart on 1604 and Culebra. The entire amount collected was donated to the American Red Cross.


NEF allocates first endowment gifts

With its $1 million endowment goal reached and donations nearing $1.5 million, Northside Education Foundation (NEF) President Mary Etlinger announced the ten TEAM Grants, exceeding expectations
ten-fold.

Winners are Warren HS “MOSAICS,” Sul Ross MS “V.I.B.R.A.N.T.,” Glenn ES “Science Supercharge,” Taft HS “Spanish for Everyone,” Ward ES “Gallop the Globe,” and NISD Career & Technology Education “ABC.”

NEF will also fund “Capturing
Kids’ Hearts” training for NISD administrators. Previously-announced TEAM Grant winners
are Jay Science & Engineering Academy, Oak Hills Terrace ES, Burke ES, and Stevens HS.

Next deadline to apply for an NEF Classroom Grant (up to $1,000) is March 24, 2005.
