Eleven-year-old Johnny Barnett and his father were injured in a roll-over following a tire blow out several weeks ago. The family is from Austin. His father remains hospitalized with severe injuries, and Johnny is now recuperating from a high neck fracture at the Kindred Rehabilitation Hospital.
A huge football fan, Johnny began listening to a Marshall HS football game on the radio, and when the Rams learned about Johnny, and that his 11th birthday was approaching, they decided to throw a birthday party.
On Oct. 5th, 18 Marshall HS football players presented Johnny with a maroon and white football signed by the team, a booster club signature shirt, and a Ram cap.
Since the Barnetts have no other family in Texas, the Rams football team has become their Texas family. Shown in the picture is Mike Garcia (right), a Junior running back, and Gene Garcia (left), a senior nose guard.
Other football players attending were Carlo Escamilla, Opie Stogsdill, Eric Rendon, Tyrone Wells, Nick Martin, Jeremy AlfaroLogan Bassett, Doug Gresenz, Andrew Turkowski, Cory Thompson, Eli Lawrence, Fonda White, Andrew Stevenson, Brennan Pierce, and Jon Garcia. The players were accompanied by their head coach, Mike Carew.
Pamela Albrecht, a Campus Instructional Technologist (CIT) at Rhodes ES, received the KENS 5-TV/San Antonio Credit Union 2004-05 ExCEL Award. In a surprise visit, Albrecht was presented a check for $1,000 from the San Antonio Credit Union and a golden apple by KENS reporter Wendy Rigby.
Albrecht has served as a CIT at both Rhodes and Evers elementary schools. According to Vice Principal Monika McKay, as the Campus Curriculum Diagnostic Benchmark Testing Coordinator, Albrecht has become more than just a contact and dispersal manager. “Teachers have come to depend upon her seasoned judgment and practical suggestions to make the benchmark testing as easy as possible.”
