Darold Williamson, the Baylor University student-athlete who became the first ever San Antonian to win a Gold medal in track and field at any Olympics, received a hero's welcome at his alma mater, Holmes & Business Careers High Schools during Darold Williamson Day. He was the anchor of the 1600 meter relay team that won Gold at the Athens, Greece 2004 Summer Olympics.
Williamson was driven in a convertible around the school to the cheers and waving of American flags by throngs of Holmes and BCHS students. Williamson encouraged the students to stay in school to earn their diplomas and go to college. “There’s nothing after the wins and medals,” he said. “But an education lives on.” Williamson was also honored during half-time of the Holmes-O’Connor game Saturday evening at Gustafson Stadium.
Olympic pride. Before Darold Williamson was a track star at Holmes HS and a gold medalist at the 2004 Summer Olympics, he was a Cable ES student. Here, Cable students Alexis Soria, Erica Trevino and Paul Barron, Jr. show their pride in their fellow Cable Cub Darold Williamson. Cable held a school-wide celebration in his honor. |
