Spanish I
Spanish is an essential language today. Our goal is for every student at CAHS to become proficient in the language. Spanish I-III are required courses at CAHS. In class, students communicate using the skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and showing; gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures; make connections with other subject areas and acquire information; develop insight into the nature of language and culture by comparing the student’s own language and culture to another; participate in communities at home and around the world by using a language other than English.(TEKS) At CAHS, students integrate their multimedia skills with the study of Spanish.

Spanish II Honors

Spanish III Dual Credit
Spanish III Dual Credit offers the student the opportunity for additional credit at the college level through Northwest Vista Community College. Students use Spanish II skills at a higher and accelerated level. Students also are exposed to authentic texts in Spanish. Students improve their skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and showing; gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures; make connections with other subject areas and acquire information; develop insight into the nature of language and culture by comparing the student’s own language and culture to another; participate in communities at home and around the world by using a language other than English.(TEKS) At CAHS, students integrate their multimedia skills with the study of Spanish.Students must complete the necessary registration through our counselor to receive Dual Credit standing.

Spanish IV Advanced Placement
Spanish IV is both an Advanced Placement course and an Honors course. The student can earn up to 28 hours of college credits, depending upon his score on the Advanced Placement test in Spanish language and/or his grade in the class. The number of credits earned is determined by the college he attends. In Spanish IV AP H, students employ skills acquired in Spanish III to develop a more advanced understanding and ability in the Spanish language which will make them successful at the Advanced Placement level. Students increase their vocabulary; study grammar; read authentic texts; write essays, poems and opinion papers; hone their listening skills and make oral presentations. Students communicate using the skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and showing; gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures; make connections with other subject areas and acquire information; develop insight into the nature of language and culture by comparing the student’s own language and culture to another; participate in communities at home and around the world by using a language other than English.(TEKS) Students continue to integrate their multimedia skills with the study of Spanish. Students do not have to take the Advanced Placement exam but are encouraged to do so.

Spanish V Honors
The Spanish 5 Honors course at Communications Arts High School is designed to achieve the following objectives as aligned with the TEKS for Languages Other Than English and Technology Applications:

Spanish VI Advanced Placement
Spanish VI is both an Advanced Placement and an Honors class. The student prepares for the Advanced Placement Exam in Spanish literature. The student may earn credits for the college he will attend by taking the Advanced Placement test and/or by his grade in the class. The number of credits awarded is determined by the college the student attends. The student studies, interprets and analyzes literature in the Spanish language. He/she reads a wide variety of genres of literature that are chosen for their appeal to students and for their appropriate length. Students study significant literary works in the authentic editions. The works have intrinsic literary value and are thematically related. The works are readily available in anthologies or on the Internet. Students learn to relate the culture revealed in the literary work to that country’s culture and other peoples and cultures. Students make connections with other subject areas and literature in other languages to broaden their literary experience. Students communicate in Spanish, develop insights into the nature of language and cultures through comparisons and participate in communities at home and around the world as they explore Spanish literature. Students do not have to take the Advanced Placement exam but are encouraged to do so.
