ISM Mentorship Summer Assignment

The purpose of Mentorship is to provide each student with an independent study research experience coupled with an opportunity to visit on a regular basis with a mentor who has expertise in the area of the student’s topic.

Your summer Mentorship (ISM) assignment is to select a mentorship topic and start looking for a mentor. Think of fields of study that you might like to pursue in college as well as serious hobbies and interests. This is an excellent opportunity for you to investigate a career field that you might like to pursue before committing to a degree in college.

Your ISM topic needs to be something that you are very interested in since you will be researching, studying, and working with a mentor for the entire year. Don’t select your topic just because you think the product would be fun, and don’t decide against a topic just because you think the presentation may be boring.

Start looking for a mentor. (Mrs. Malik can suggest possible mentors, but it is the student’s responsibility to find a mentor.) Ask everyone you know (parents, teachers, friends, relatives, neighbors, co-workers) if they can think of anyone who works in the field in which you are interested. Ask this year's seniors if they would recommend the mentor they worked with this year.

Consider where the mentor works because transportation to and from your meetings is your responsibility. You will be required to meet twice six weeks and with parent permission, you are allowed to sign out and meet with your mentor during Mentorship class. After the first six weeks, we will block English and Mentorship to allow more time for meeting. The more that you meet with your mentor, the more you will get out of the mentorship.

When you find a mentor, get their name, address, phone number and email address so that Mrs. Malik can send them information as soon as school begins in the fall, or you can print the Informational Letter to Mentor and the Mentorship Information Brochure, which can be found on my webpage or by accessing my webpage via the CAHS webpage or at

https://nisd.schoolnet.com/outreach/whths/comm_arts/malik_shellie/%20.

Please feel free to print these out and share them with potential mentors. If you have any questions, email Mrs. Malik at shelliemalik@nisd.net. Have a great summer!
