Video Technology is the third year course in our strand of Communications courses. In this course, students will:

• Learn basic camera and production techniques such as parts of the camera, types of camera shots, transitions, picture composition, special effects, lighting, and audio recording.
• Plan and produce video projects with a group, and perform the various jobs required to create a video or film, including director, videographer, on-camera talent and editor.
• Create storyboards and write scripts for video using the correct terminology for camera movement, types of shots, lighting, transitions, graphics and sound.
• Learn non-linear video editing (using Apple Final Cut Pro), including appropriate transitions, titles and special effects. Students will also analyze editing techniques in films and television in order to learn such concepts as “invisible” editing, the psychological effects of editing, and the relationship between sound and image. Students will also create original music for your projects using Apple Soundtrack.
• Learn the history of television and film. Students will learn how to use the vocabulary of film and video to speak and write about the past, present and future of visual media. Fridays will be devoted to our Film Studies Unit, in which we will explore elements of cinema such as cinematography, editing, sound, genres, screenplays, etc.
• Acquire media literacy skills through analysis of messages found in print advertising, radio, films, music, TV, and the Internet. Students will deconstruct media messages in order to look at media with a critical eye, to recognize that media are “created” by one or more producers and consciously designed for specific audiences and purposes. Students will learn to understand how media construct reality, and how the aesthetic forms of media relate to their content.
