Yearbook Course Description
Perhaps the most important aspect of the yearbook is photography. Our main focus at the beginning of the year will be developing and building photography skills. These skills will include:
• Taking and recognizing well-made photographs
• Understanding and applying composition principles
• Studying a scene and choosing images to tell a story
• Using Adobe Photoshop to prepare photographs for print and online publication
Of course, design and writing are the other important elements of the Yearbook. Students will develop the following skills as they apply to designing and writing for the Yearbook:
• Composing layout and design using Adobe InDesign
• Using typography as a design element
• Gathering and organizing information
• Writing Yearbook “copy,” including headlines and captions
• Conducting interviews and collecting quotes
• Editing and proofreading
Because the Yearbook is a business venture in which we work with a publishing company, the Yearbook staff is responsible for the following tasks:
• Organizing sales and distribution of the Yearbook
• Selling advertising
• Establishing and meeting publication deadlines
• Preparing pages for uploading to our publishing company
Our class is also responsible for producing the Communications Arts Newsletter,
among other journalistic duties. Students in this class will work on feature
articles for the Newsletter and possibly for other publications to be developed
later.
