On Wednesday, Sept. 11, Ashley Perez, a sixth grade student at Stevenson Middle School, came to the aid of a fellow student who was choking. Ashley quickly performed the Heimlich maneuver on this student and cleared his airway allowing him to breathe. Ashley reported the incident to Coach Carol Sue Hargett, who immediately escorted the student to the school nurse. Ashley was taught the Heimlich maneuver by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Perez. Thanks to Ashley's quick thinking, she helped divert a potentially dangerous situation into a life saving act of courage.
