Mrs. Pentz, a 5th grade teacher at Driggers, wanted to make something for her husband, SMSgt Jason Pentz, who is stationed in Kuwait with his Force Protection Flight. Their walls seemed to be very empty, so she thought it would be nice to make something they could hang up in their flight office or day room to remind them we are grateful for their service. She came up with idea of a quilt hanging where the Driggers students could decorate each fabric square as a class. So Mrs. Pentz picked out the fabric, the students and teachers decorated their class squares, and Mrs. Brogan, the Driggers Elementary Computer Technologist, put them all together, created the design, and added backing material to make a quilt. This wonderful quilt from home should arrive in Kuwait just after Christmas. What started as something for SMSgt Jason Pentz turned into a gift for his entire Force Protection Flight. He'll send us pictures of when they get it, and we'll add them to this post. (Click here for more details.)

Students at Rita K. Driggers were given a very high honor this Holiday Season. They were asked to create a Chihuly Glass tree for the Northside Testing Annex building across from their school. Students used recycled water bottles and acrylic paint to make replicas of Mr. Chihuly's blown glass art. He has created art for many places all over the world, including our own San Antonio Library down town and the San Antonio Museum of Art. You can find out more about his glass creations here. 5th grade Art Club students took a short walk across the street and placed the creations on the tree while listening to carols. A great time was had by all! (Click here for more detail.)

The week in which September 17th (Constitution Day) falls has been designated by the state legislature as Celebrate Freedom Week in Texas Public Schools. Although lessons on government, history, and responsible citizenship are embedded in our Northside Social Studies curriculum and are explicitly taught in the fifth grade course in American History, the following activities have been provided to help you create awareness in all students about this special week. They are designed to be part of morning announcements with optional follow up activities for the classroom.
(Note: A more detailed plan for each day can be found on attached pages here.)
