Hoppin' Down The Learning Trail

The NISD Outdoor Classroom experience gives children an opportunity
to get up close and personal with San Antonio's natural side. The students
observe and gain an appreciation for its native wildlife and foliage.
By analyzing scat, tracks and trails, they learn the importance of slowing
down and "taking in" the scene in order to understand what
is happening in the natural environment around them. They are exposed
to conservation issues and perform activities tying nature to school
subjects such as art, writing, science and even math.
Thus far, students marveled at the many colors and textures of the lichens
on the trees and the bright purple fruits of the prickly pair cactus.
They spotted several cottontail rabbits and listened intently to the
howling of coyotes. The children eagerly studied the scat and tracks
of many deer, hoping for a glimpse of just one. They are fascinated
by evidence of a resident puma, or mountain lion, and her adolescent
cub. And most are amazed by the size and speed of the various orb weaver
spiders that create their enormous, glittering webs alongside the trail.
This school year, over 200 Northside fifth grade classes are expected
to attend the ever-changing outdoor classroom field trip. The students
are excitedly anticipating their turn to witness the fall migration
of millions of monarch butterflies or the overwintering of the red-breasted
robins. The outdoor classroom has proven to be a valuable tool for introducing
children to the wonders of San Antonio nature and their connection with
it. We are looking forward to a year full of environmental education
and fun.
