NISD Outdoor Classroom

San Antonio Backyard Habitat

"Wildlife" can be found everywhere.

Through this unit of study, students gain an appreciation for all wildlife big and small by exploring nature on campus and in their own neighborhoods.

Unit activities will

  • help students learn to observe wildlife,
  • become familiar with San Antonio's "urban animals,"
  • define basic habitat needs,
  • understand that humans share their habitat with many creatures and
  • realize that our actions have an effect on those creatures and the environment.
Participants will receive a packet containing background information on San Antonio's "urban animals," activities and resources. They will also be given the opportunity to check out a Backyard Habitat Box containing supplemental items such as additional activities, books, videos and urban animal specimens (skins, turtle shells, etc.).
It is suggested that participants of this unit of study choose NISD Outdoor Classroom field trip dates from March to May.
