Long Time Volunteer Retires
March 22, 2007

Addie with Mr. and Mrs. Elrod

Mr. and Mrs. Elrod join super volunteer, Mrs. Addie Perez, in a celebration of her 17 years of service as a volunteer at Elrod Elementary. "Miss Addie," as we have come to know her, and her belated husband began volunteering when their grandchildren were students here. She found her work so rewarding that she continued all these years even after the grandchildren graduated and have homes of their own. "Miss Addie" has been a joy everyday she volunteers. We are sorry to see her leave San Antonio, but wish her the best in her new neighborhood in Dallas!

Feather a Turkey Project

Elrod's Student Council sold turkey feathers to students for $.25 each. They did this to raise money to help feed needy families this Thanksgiving Holiday season. The classroom with the most feathers on their turkey won a pizza party and their teacher won a turkey dinner. Overall, Elrod Student Council raised over $3,000.

Multicultural Presentations
Nov. 15, 2007

Elrod students, in grades 2-5, had the opportunity to learn about many other cultures recently. Men and women came from the Defense Language Institute at Lackland AFB representing 23 countries around the world. Some of the countries represented were Czech Republic, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Dominican Republic, Bosnia, and Guinea. These men and women are studying the English language at Lackland AFB to become better teachers in their native countries. They talked to Elrod students in 2-5 grades to improve their English speaking skills. They taught students about their native land. Our visitors told us they had a wonderful time at our school and that the Elrod students were very respectful and showed a lot of interest by the questions they asked. They were very pleased that we had invited them.

Red Ribbon Week at Elrod
Oct. 23-27, 2006

This year marks the 19th annual celebration of Red Ribbon Week, a week inspired by Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency. Kiki dedicated his life to making a positive difference in this world by joining the Agency in order to fight illegal drugs. However, while working undercover in Mexico in 1985, Kiki was kidnapped and murdered by drug traffickers. Responding to Kiki's goal to end illegal drugs, his family and the residents of his hometown, Calexico, California, began wearing red ribbons. In 1988, the U.S. Congress officially proclaimed the last week of October as Red Ribbon Week. Now, over 100,000 schools and other organizations across the United States will use this time to especially convey the important message about living a drug-free life. In conjunction with Red Ribbon Week, our school will also celebrate Character Counts Week. A person who has strong character is one who is trustworthy, responsible, respectful, fair, caring, and a good citizen. Students at Elrod Elementary have strong character and will always say "NO" to illegal drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and gangs. They also promise to always try to peacefully resolve conflict.

Shelly Kneupper Tucker, Texas Storyteller

Shelly Tucker came to Elrod with her spinning wheel and weaving loom in tow and her brought her vivid imagination! She can made Elrod students rock the house with laughter with her brand of storytelling. We loved her visit with us.

Elrod Students Set Goals

Elrod Eagles aimed high at the 1st annual goal setting kick-off, September 29th! Each class set a goal that was written on a beach ball and placed in the "goal-net". Bill Taylor held the spotlight (KENS 5 news team) and rocked the house motivating kids to set goals. Next, the Spurs Coyote and T-Bone pumped up the kids with hilarious skits and audience participation. Even the Marshall High School Color Guard and Cheerleaders popped in to present the flag and do some flips down the aisles. A local favorite, HEBuddy, made a special appearance to support the importance of setting goals. What can we say? It was a blast! We're aiming high and the sky is the limit at Elrod Elementary. Go Eagles Go!
