Between 1774 and 1789, thirteen colonies became a nation - the United States of America. The Constitutional Convention of 1787 proposed a Constitution to govern the new nation. Although this controversial new Constitution provoked a great deal of resistance, because it was not well liked at first, it was eventually ratified by the necessary number of states to provide the framework of our United States government.
