Problem Solving:
Fast Freddy Steps and Strategies

Northside elementary schools use the Fast Freddy model to teacher children steps and strategies for solving problems. Children who learn to use the steps and strategies will be able to apply this knowledge to problem solving at any level and with any math problem. The goal is to develop proficient problem solvers.

Freddy is a frog who will help us through the four step process.

The steps are remembered this way:

F A S T

F - Find
(two parts)
Find the question.
To do this, the child should read the problem twice.  Then go back the third time and read to find the question.  What will we be trying to find out?  Once you have found the question, underline it.

Read again to find the facts.  Circle important information that will help you solve the problem.
A - Action
What action will be needed to solve this problem?   Which strategy will I need to use?  Will you need to add?  Will you need to subtract?  Is this a pattern?  Do I need to make a table?  Will I be making a number sentence?  Many problems will be multiple step involving more than one action or strategy.
S - Solve
Estimate the answer.  Solve the problem.  Follow your action plan. Use the facts and strategies.  Students are always required to show their work with pictures, labels, words and numbers.  (This will also help you to understand where a mistake was made.)  Include a number sentence.  Check your estimation, were you close to the correct answer?
T - Think
Think about the problem.  Reread the question.  Can you answer the question?  Answer the question with a complete sentence.  Explain how you got the answer.  A student who can explain his or her steps clearly is demonstrating mastery of the problem solving process.

The children can use these four steps to solve multiple step problems as well.  Getting the correct answer is great.  Knowing how to use the strategy is fantastic!
