Raul B. Fernandez is a builder, developer, and real estate investor. A distinguished alumnus of Texas A&M University, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Army Artillery in 1960.

He started his professional career with H.B. Zachry Co. before reporting for military service at a missile site in Germany. Upon completing active military service in 1963 he returned to San Antonio to establish a successful career in real estate with J.H. Uptmore & Associates before starting his own building company in 1990.

Fernandez was first elected to the NISD Board of Trustees in 1972 and served for eighteen years, five terms as President. He helped guide Northside in such areas as the construction of twenty-four schools, numerous academic program improvements and opening the district schools to Community Education life long learning opportunities.

Fernandez has been a leader in professional, civic, and educational organizations at the city and state level, serving on numerous boards and commissions. He served on the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Fernandez married his Laredo Martin High School sweetheart, Dr. Sylvia Pena Fernandez. They have been blessed with three children, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
