Regional Winners Scholastic Art and Writing Competition
Four NISD art teachers have students advancing in the Scholastic Art and Writing Competiton, Marguerite Campa, Clark HS, Mark Peavy, Clark HS, Linda Fleetwood, Marshall HS, and Elise Johnson, Taft HS.  The following students have received regional recognition and will advance to round 2 of adjudication:

Los Leones Student Arts Festival was an amazing event; it continues every year to break the barriers of excellence!  This fun “happening”, in partnership with Leon Valley, Northside ISD, and Northside Education Foundation, showcased over 2500 pieces of NISD student artwork, presented live entertainment from NISD performing arts, and provided a true arts festival for all those attending.  The excitement culminated with the chalkfest competition and the winning of the rotating trophies. 

2010-2011 Los Leones Publicity Contest Winners

The artwork of 309 students advanced to district level in the Los Leones annual publicity contest.  Teachers held campus level instruction and competitions for this contest and then submitted five entries from their campuses to the district contest.  Los Leones committee members selected the ten contest winners.

Scholastic Art Gold Key Winner

Congratulations to Sarah, art student at John Marshall HS, Gold Key winner at regional Scholastic Art Competition; colored pencil drawing entitled DJ Morph to the Max. Only 12 Gold Key awards given in our region; work will advance to the national level in New York City. Scholastic is a scholarship / recognition program founded in 1932 for students who excel in the visual arts or creative writing. There were over 100,000 entries at the regional levels across the nation this year. Teacher/sponsor is Linda Fleetwood, John Marshall HS art teacher.

Los Leones Arts Festival, Leon Valley, Saturday, November 07, 2009, saw wild cats come alive as over 170 student artists from 27 Northside schools created sidewalk masterpieces. The two-hour annual competition featured 42 teams vying for rotating trophies while chalking-up sidewalk squares with theme “Wildcats in the Wild”.

NISD high school art students dominated the regional competition of the Visual Arts Scholastic Education State Art Contest (VASE). Northside qualified 45 students for the state contest; 7 more students than runners-up LaVernia or Northeast. Congrats to NISD high school art students and their great teachers. Best of luck at state contest!

2nd Annual Middle School Theatre Festival Storms the Stage!

Congratulations to each middle school theatre department for outstanding productions presented on Saturday, February 7 at the 2nd Annual NISD Middle School Theatre Festival.  Students and instructors presented a variety of shows reflecting quality theatre TEKS applications.  HS theatre instructors provided critiques and assessments for each production.

NISD appreciates the efforts of Warren Theatre Directors David Nanny and Cody Eoff for hosting the event.  The festival was organized and coordinated by Elizabeth Sanchez-Lopez, NISD Dance/Theatre Supervisor.

NISD Orchestra  Instructor Recognized by Texas Chapter of ASTA

Congratulations to Jennifer Garcia-Hettinger, Connally MS Orchestra Director, for being selected as the Marjorie Keller Young Teacher of the Year Recipient for the Texas Chapter of the American String Teachers Association.  Jennifer is an accomplished violinist, professional educator and performer, and is recognized by her state colleagues for exemplary teaching strategies.

The following NISD students were named to the prestigious All-State Organizations 2009, sponsored by Texas Music Educators Association.. They will also be performing at the TMEA convention in February in San Antonio.

NISD Texas All-State Jazz Selection!

O’Connor HS junior Michael S. was selected as the jazz pianist for the Texas Music Educators’ Association All-State Jazz Ensemble. Only one jazz pianist in Texas is selected to this position in the jazz ensemble. Michael will perform at the TMEA convention in February, 2009 in San Antonio. Jazz instructor is Roland Sandoval.

Northside marching bands successfully completed the 2008 UIL marching season in grand style. Holmes HS received an award of “Excellence.” Clark, Taft, Jay, Marshall, OConnor, Stevens, and Warren HS received a “Superior” rating and qualified for Area G Marching Contest. Jay and OConnor HS reached the finals of the Area G Marching Contest. OConnor HS placed 5th in Area G competition and qualified for the Texas State Marching Contest. Congrats to all NISD bands for a great marching season!

Los Leones Publicity Contest Winners Picked from 288 Pieces of Artwork

What a super contest!!  It was an extremely difficult task for the judging committee; the quality of the artwork and the participation at this early date in the year was amazing!  The Los Leones Judging Committee judged 288 total pieces of artwork Wednesday, 10-08-08. This very diligent committee carefully viewed and judged every piece.  Northside teachers, you and your kids are true winners!  Thanks, teachers for making this opportunity available to your students and for working with them in so many diversified ways TO MAKE IT HAPPEN FOR THE STUDENTS!  The Los Leones Arts Festival in Leon Valley is open to the public on Saturday, November 15, 2008, 8:30 am to 2:00 pm.

NISD Bands Strut Their Stuff!!!! 

On October 20, 2007, the marching bands from Tom C. Clark, Oliver Wendell Holmes, John Jay, John Marshall, Sandra Day O’Connor, John Paul Stevens, and Earl Warren High School each received a SUPERIOR RATING in The University Interscholastic League Region XI Marching Contest.
 
This Division I rating is based on assessment criterion that have served the State of Texas for over 75 years.  NISD is very proud to have 100% of their high school marching bands perform above the state level of excellence as outlined by The University Interscholastic League. Congratulations to all students and directors involved for their hard work and high level of excellence.

NISD All-State Jazz Selection

Congratulations to Justin Crow, senior jazz trumpet student at O’Connor HS, for being selected to the Texas Music Educators Association All-State Jazz Ensemble.  Selection to this ensemble is very elite, with only 20 students chosen.  Justin will perform in the Texas All-State Jazz Ensemble during the Texas Music Educators Association Conference to be held in February, 2008 in San Antonio.
