Please take time to read through this information and mark your calendars with the scheduled events.
As the 2007-2008 school year begins, please know that every member of the Galm staff is dedicated to making this a productive and successful year for your child. With your support and interest in your child's education, we will work together to build a winning team.
Sincerely,

Unity
I dreamed I stood in a studio
And watched two sculptors there.
The clay they used was a young child's mind
And they fashioned it with care.
One was a teacher-the tools he used
Were books, music, and art.
The other, a parent, worked with a guiding hand,
And a gentle, loving heart.
Day after day, the teacher toiled with touch
That was careful, deft, and sure.
While the parent labored by his side
And polished and smoothed it o'er.
And when at last their task was done,
They were proud of what they had wrought.
For the things they had molded into the child
Could neither be sold nor bought.
And each agreed they would have failed
If each had worked alone.
For behind the parent stood the school
And behind the teacher, the home.

Clarence M. Galm
1907-1987
Galm Elementary opened its doors on September 1, 1987 . It was the thirtieth elementary school to be built in the Northside Independent School District . The school was named by the Board of Trustees in honor of a hardworking compassionate man who devoted his career to bettering the education of children.
In 1942 Clarence M. Galm was selected as Trustee to the Helotes District.
In 1948 he helped begin the crusade of merging existing schools into one common district. His goal was to provide as many educational opportunities as possible for all children but especially those in the rural areas. His vision became a reality in 1950 when the Northside School District was consolidated.
Twenty years ago, Galm Elementary opened with an enrollment of 367 students. In 2000-2001, a twenty-classroom addition was completed. Our expected enrollment for the 2007-2008 school year is 1025.

CLARENCE GALM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
MISSION STATEMENT
Clarence Galm Elementary School has students, parents, teachers, and administrators who provide a stimulating environment that promotes academic excellence by developing independent learners who are responsible members of the school community.
OUR GOAL: In every school, there is one goal parents and staff naturally share: that of providing a quality educational program. The parents have invested in the school their most valuable possession: their children. If a school program is to be successful, it must have the support of the community of which it is a part. Therefore, it is important that we form a partnership.

SCHOOL DAY
School begins at 7:45 a.m. and dismisses at 2:45 p.m. We ask that you please remain outside the front doors or in the front foyer while waiting for your child due to safety. Staff members are on duty to supervise our children at 7:15 in the morning and until 3:10 p.m. in the afternoon. Any children not picked up by their parents/guardians will be escorted into the front office. Please adhere to these times when dropping off or picking up your children. If there is an emergency, please call the office at 397-1150.
EARLY RELEASE DAYS
The 2007-2008 calendar has six early release days for elementary schools – September 14th, October 12th, November 9th, February 1st, April 4th, and May 2nd. Dismissal on these days is at 11:45 a.m. Lunch will be served before dismissal. The early release days provide time for staff development, which includes, but not limited to, educational presentations related to curriculum, enhancement of professional development, instructional planning and parent conferences.
ARRIVAL OF STUDENTS
For the safety of our children, we request that students arrive at school no earlier than 7:15 a.m. When they arrive, they may go to the cafeteria to eat breakfast or they may go to their assigned location: K – Cafeteria, 1 st – K/1 st grade hallway, 2 nd – 2 nd grade hallway, 3 rd – 3 rd grade hallway, 4 th – 4 th grade hallway and 5 th – gym.
TARDINESS
Arriving at school on time every day is extremely important. The first bell rings at 7:40 a.m. Children are in the room by 7:45 a.m . and announcements take place at 7:50 a.m. Information and instructions are given during the first fifteen minutes, which can affect the rest of the school day. If a child comes in late, he/she often misses out on this information.
Students arriving after 7:45 a.m. will be marked tardy by their teacher in the classroom. Students arriving after 8:00AM must come to the office, accompanied by the parent , to sign in and pick up a tardy slip. Please note: 7:45 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. is a crucial time to review Reading Strategies for all students –DEAR time – Drop Everything and Read or DEAS (some days will be designated for Drop Everything and Do Science).
A child arriving after 9:00 a.m. is considered absent for the day.
When a child is absent, the parent or guardian is encouraged to call the school the morning of the absence. A note must be sent to school upon the child's return explaining the absence. Please include in the note:
date of the note
name of the child
date of the absence(s)
specific reason for the absence(s)
parent's signature
Partial day absences due to health care reasons (doctor's/dentists appointments, etc.) will be counted as “present”, provided you bring a doctor's excuse or a parent note to the office explaining the partial day absence. You will also be asked to sign the student in on a health care absence roster.
You may request missed class work be available for you to pick up after the 3 rd consecutive absence. After 3 or more consecutive days of illness, a doctor's note will be required. When requesting work, please allow sufficient time for the teacher to prepare the work for pick-up.
Excessive absences and/or tardies may result in a report to the attendance officer. See the Northside Student-Parent Handbook for more information on attendance policies.
DISMISSAL OF STUDENTS
School ends at 2:45 p.m. Please wait in front of the school if you are meeting your child.
At the beginning of the school year, please let your child's teacher know how he/she will be going home, by completing the blue Student Dismissal Information Card. (Bus Riders- go to the bus circle: Parent Pick-up and walkers – go to front of school; Daycare Bus Riders- go to the bus circle.) Also, send a note to the teacher whenever there is a change in routine . If someone other than the parent or guardian is to pick up your child, a written note must be sent with the child. When a student is picked up from school before the end of the day, the student must be signed out in the front office. Office staff will verify the student's emergency card for authorized adults to sign out student and ID will be checked, to insure your child's safety.
AFTER SCHOOL CARE
After School Kare (ASK) is a program offered by the San Antonio Urban Ministries. They use Galm's cafeteria to provide childcare from 2:45 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. For further information call ASK at 431-6466.
*Several area day cares provide transportation to and from school. The telephone numbers can be obtained at the front office.
If you provide transportation for your child, you must use the front driveway. The side driveway (bus circle) is reserved for buses only. Automobiles in the bus circle can be a danger to our students who ride the bus. For student drop-off and pick-up, please use the designated lane in front of the school. Please do not park in the designated drive-through lane. This hinders the flow of traffic and can cause danger to our students.
TRANSPORTATION SERVICES
The district provides transportation for eligible bus students only . Requirements are established to help guarantee the safety of every student.
Each eligible student will be placed on the bus daily unless written permission is on file with the teacher advising of another means of transportation.
When there is a change from the usual means of transportation , parents MUST NOTIFY THE SCHOOL IN WRITING .
In accordance with district policy, students may not ride a bus other than their assigned one. Ineligible students may not ride a bus at any time except for school activities such as field trips.
|
BUS BEHAVIOR
Along with the opportunity to ride the bus goes a responsibility for each bus rider to exhibit safe behavior at all times. This includes waiting for the bus and departing from the bus. Failure to observe bus rules will result in a bus report. Three copies, signed by the bus driver, are forwarded to the vice principal/principal. One copy is sent home, one copy is kept on file at school and one is sent back to the transportation office reporting the action taken. After the first written bus report, the document signifies the second warning of misconduct (the first was a verbal warning- unless it is a major offense). The administrator will take appropriate action, which may include removal of bus privileges. We always need and appreciate our parents' support in assuring safe transit for our students.
For further information on specific requirements and consequences for violating the bus rules and regulations, please refer to the Northside Student-Parent Handbook.

SCHOOL NURSE - MEDICATION POLICY
Reminder – Make sure the school nurse has an updated shot record on file before school starts in August!
A school nurse is available at Galm every day for illness and injuries that occur during the school day. The office personnel assist when the nurse is not in the clinic.
|
ALL MEDICATIONS MUST BE TAKEN TO THE SCHOOL OFFICE.
Long-term prescription medication may be administered only if the physician completes the required SPECIAL HEALTH FORM and the medication is received IN A PROPERLY LABELED PRESCRIPTION BOTTLE. (The required form can be obtained from the nurse or office personnel.)
Short term (up to 2 weeks.) prescription medication may be administered upon written request by the parent. This MUST ALSO BE RECEIVED IN A PROPERLY LABELED PRESCRIPTION BOTTLE.
Non-prescription medications (including aspirin/Tylenol/Ibuprofen) are NOT to be administered at school.
Leftover medication cannot be sent home with the students. It must be picked up by the parent/guardian.
The medication policy is designed so that students who require medication to maintain optimum health may be served. However, a few reminders are listed below:
Please do not instruct "give my child this medicine." The names and dosage for each medicine should be specified.
Parents with students that have asthma or allergies whether they are seasonal, insect related, drug or food related should:
If a child becomes ill or is injured at school, he/she will be given first aid and the parents notified if the severity of the injury or illness warrants such action. In no case will a child be sent home until the parent or the person indicated by the parent has been contacted.
(Every effort will be made to contact the parent first.) If the parent is unable to come for the child, the parent must make arrangements.
In an extreme emergency, EMS will be called. We ask that students be kept at home when ill and that they are temperature (100+ degrees) free for 24 hours.
PLEASE KEEP YOUR EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBERS UPDATED!
HEAD LICE
Between 8 and 12 million American Children get head lice. Getting lice can happen to any child, and is nothing to panic or be embarrassed about. Controlling head lice requires the understanding and cooperation of school and parents, it is important to detect and treat head lice as early as possible.
The school nurse checks classrooms often, children who are infected with lice are excluded until treated and the nurse will continue to check that child until all nits (eggs) are removed. The Academy of Pediatrics and the State Department of Health have issued statements that no child should be excluded from school because of having nits.
Northside ISD staff, teachers, and nurses are constantly checking in order to prevent a lice problem in our schools.
Please routinely check your child's head for lice and if your child should have lice; alert the school nurse so she may check your child's classroom. If you have any questions concerning head lice, please contact your school nurse.
NON-PARTICIPATION IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION or Physical Activity:
A letter or health form from your doctor is necessary if your child has any special health problem that would necessitate possible restriction of physical education activities. Please note: You, the parent, may request that your child be excused from physical education activities for a maximum of three days. Any period longer than that requires a statement from your doctor.
COMMUNICATION
Memos concerning school information are sent home frequently. PTA memos are also sent home. “Friday Folders” are blue folders that will contain any important information from the school, parent bulletins, book orders, etc. Please stress to your child the importance of giving information sent from school to you. A copy of all PTA correspondence will be placed on the bulletin board opposite the library. It is located in the left hallway on your immediate left after entering through the front doors.
We strive to keep you informed about your child's school and activities. If you have any questions, always feel free to call our school office (397-1150) .

CAFETERIA SERVICES: Rachel Moreno (Manager) 397-1185
Breakfast and lunch are served daily in the school cafeteria.
All students are issued a personalized meal code for purchasing meals. Meals may be paid for daily or in advance. In order to pay for meals in advance, simply send any amount of money you wish at any time to the school cafeteria. The money will be deposited into a meal account set up by the cafeteria manager. If paying by check, please write the child's name on the check. This meal account can only be accessed by using the personalized meal code already issued. The meal account can be used for the purchase of breakfast and/or lunch. If you want your child to use the account for additional snacks, a written note must be sent to the cafeteria manager so that she can put a special code on your child's account.
Parents/visitors are welcome to join their child for any meal. Please stop by the school office to sign in and pick up a visitor sticker.
If a lunch is forgotten, the student is required to call home to make arrangements. If no arrangements can be made, a meal will be provided and "charged" to the student. It is Northside's intent that children not be hungry at school; however, it is the responsibility of parents or guardians to pay for meals provided, or to provide breakfast and lunch from home. At the elementary level, your child will only be allowed a maximum of five (5) meals in cafeteria charges . After your child has accrued five (5) meals in charges, your child will receive an alternate meal consisting of a peanut butter sandwich and a milk. This alternate meal will cost $0.60 cents. Students will continue to receive this alternate meal until all cafeteria charges are paid. Proper notification will be made to persons responsible for payment.
Please notify your school's cafeteria manager if your child is allergic to peanut butter or milk so another alternate can be provided.
Please note- if you want your left over money from your child's account- please let food service know at central office, if not, please let us know if you want it to roll over. A reminder indicating the last day charges can be accepted will be sent in a parent bulletin.
The following are the prices charged by the school cafeteria:

Milk is provided with each meal. Juice may be purchased for $0.30. If there is a medical reason a student is unable to have milk or milk products, parents must provide a written note from the child's physician and juice will be substituted for no additional cost.
Breakfast is served between 7:15am - 7:35 am . Check with your child's teacher or call the school office regarding information about the lunch schedule.
Elementary schools are required to follow nutrition rules established by the Texas Department of Agriculture. Parents may choose the food items sent to school for their own child, but may not send food or purchase food for other students. This limitation prohibits parents from sending cakes, cookies, etc. to school unless it is to celebrate their child's birthday. Please note : treats for birthday celebrations are to be handed out at the end of the day in the classroom (flowers or balloons may not be delivered to students at school). The rule also prohibits students selling food fund-raising items to students during the school day or extended day. These food guidelines apply to field trips as well as activities provided during the extended school day, with (2) two exceptions: two school parties and a third special day designated by the campus principal.
For the 2007-2008 school year the two school parties will be the winter parties in December and the Fiesta parties in April. The third designated day will be the last day of school, June 4, 2008 .
Elementary school students are allowed to have (1) nutrious snack during the school day.
Foods may be used in the classroom for instructional purposes as long as the selected food is not considered to be a food of minimal nutritional value or candy.
For further information concerning the NISD food at school policies please refer to:
NISD Elementary Student/Parent Handbook
www.agr.state.tx.us/foodnutrition
TAKING STUDENTS OUT OF CLASS DURING SCHOOL
Children who need to leave school for appointments will be called to the office upon your arrival. Parents will need to show proper identification anytime they wish to sign their child out of school. For the welfare of our students, teachers cannot release students to anyone without office authorization. Office authorization will be given only to parents and other adults listed on the current medical emergency card. It is the parent's responsibility to update the medical emergency card information as changes occur.
PARENT/STUDENT/TEACHER COMMUNICATION
Plans for after school should be made in the morning before your child leaves home. Always send a note to the teacher if a child will have a change in routine. We will relay messages to students in emergency situations. However, remember that each message results in an interruption to classroom instruction.
We welcome and encourage your communications with our teachers. Teachers appreciate your interest and want to respond to your concerns. You may contact your child's teacher by leaving a message on his/her voicemail during the school day, by e-mail (ex: firstlastname@nisd.net ) or by sending a note with your child.
We cannot stress enough the importance of keeping addresses and phone numbers up-to-date at all times. These are our only source in case of illness or emergency. Notify us of any change by sending a note with your child or by calling the school office.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES
A school supply list is provided for each student at the end of the previous school year. The list is provided for new students. Also, the list is posted on our school website. A student is responsible for his/her materials in his/her desk and cubby.
ELEMENTARY DRESS CODE
Research indicates that student behavior is influenced by student dress and grooming.
Students in K, 1 st and 2 nd may wear regular shorts
Shorts, skirts, skorts, culottes and dresses for students in 3 rd , 4 th and 5 th grade should be no more than four inches above the top of the kneecap. (There should not be a cut or slit in the clothing that extends beyond the four-inch limit.)
All pants are to be full length (capri pants should also be no less than four inches below the bottom of the kneecap) and worn at the waist (no sagging or bagging)
Tight fitting pants (tights, spandex, bicycle pants), cut-off and intentionally frayed pants are also prohibited.
Oversized clothing, tank tops, muscle shirts, halter-tops, spaghetti straps, exposed backs or midriffs and see-through garments are not permitted.
Please have your children wear tennis shoes on the day they will participate in P.E. (Students attend P.E. every other day.)
Refer to the section on dress and grooming in the Northside Student-Parent Handbook for more detailed information.
ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT
Electronic equipment such as CD players, iPods, etc. are not allowed at school. Cell phones are allowed, but must be turned off and kept in backpacks.
STUDENT BEHAVIOR (remember our NISD Safeline telephone #: 397-SAFE)
Students are expected to display proper respect for school staff and students and to act always in a responsible manner. We believe it is a fundamental right of all students to have the opportunity to learn without unnecessary distractions from other students. Teachers should be able to provide learning opportunities for all students without disruption. Galm teachers promote positive discipline in the classroom. Positive discipline includes class meetings and teaching children to solve problems; please check the Dolphin Pride Folders!
DOLPHIN PRIDE
Our school counselors sponsor this program, which promotes good behavior. Students can receive Dolphin Pride Coupons from teachers or other staff when they exhibit good citizenship, behavior and habits. Students can “spend” their coupons on items from the Dolphin Pride Cart, which is maintained and available through the counselor's office.
Dolphin Pride: We are kind to others! We do our best work! We follow the rules !
Students have full responsibility for textbooks and library books issued to them. Any book, which is lost or damaged, must be paid for before the final report card or withdrawal papers are issued.
LOST AND FOUND
Articles not claimed by students are kept in the cafeteria. Small items (glasses, keys etc.) are kept in the office. We strongly urge you to label all articles of clothing, back packs and lunch boxes. Due to lack of storage space, after a period of time, unclaimed items are donated to a charitable cause.
Check with the teacher before any animal is brought to school. The district has specific guidelines regarding animals on campus. Also, dogs should not be brought on school grounds.
Birthdays are special days in a child's life. Student birthdays are recognized every day
during morning announcements. Students may share cookies or cupcakes with their classmates on their birthday at the end of the school day in the classroom.
Balloons, etc. should not be sent to school for any occasion. We prefer that invitations to parties not be handed out at school. If you wish to do so, invitations must be given to everyone in the class. This is the only way to be fair and avoid hurt feelings. Presents should never be exchanged at school.
VISITORS
We cordially invite parents and other visitors to Galm. We do request that all visitors come to the school office to sign in and pick up a Visitor Sticker. You are welcome to visit your child's classroom. Check with the teacher for specific schedule information. Please note: students are not allowed to leave the school premises during school hours unless they are checked out at the front office, by parent/guardian.
Student field trips are planned by grade level and according to curriculum academics. Students must have a signed permission form to attend a field trip. Students are expected to ride the bus to and from the field trip destination. Parents are welcomed to accompany their child on field trips, keeping in mind that the designated teacher is responsible for the safety and conduct of the students.
Some field trip destinations limit the number of parent chaperones and may require admission fees. Parents are not allowed to ride the bus unless cleared through the principal for medical reasons.

GRADING/PROGRESS REPORTS/REPORT CARDS/HONOR ROLL
Work samples will be sent home regularly throughout the school year to keep parents informed about the child's progress. The purpose of progress reports is to keep parents informed about their child's work. If a student is not passing, expect progress reports to be sent home at least every three weeks. Many teachers will send home progress reports for all students on a regular basis, parents may also access student progress on Parent Connection. Report cards will be sent home on the following dates: November 2, 2007 , January 25th, 2008 , April 4, 2008 , and June 4, 2008 .
HONOR ROLL
The honor roll for grades three through five consists of two categories, (1) students having all A's and (2) students having all A's and B's with at least one A. To be on the honor roll, students may not have any N's, U's or I's with the following exception. A student may have an N or I in handwriting and still be on the honor roll.
HOMEWORK
Homework is an excellent way of developing responsibility and self-discipline but should not become a burden to your child or to you. The time spent on homework should be about 10 minutes per grade (e.g., 2 nd grade = 20 minutes, 5 th grade = 50 minutes).
Homework is intended to reinforce and review what has been learned in class including our Academic Standards & TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge of Skills). We encourage homework, and believe it provides an opportunity for you to participate in your child's education.
Your support and interest will show your child that education is important. Below are some things you can do to help:
Be a willing listener when your child talks about school activities.
Provide a place to study that is quiet and well lighted.
See that your child is distracted as little as possible while studying.
Turn off the radio or television if it is in the room where the child is studying.
Spend time listening to your child read. Ask the teacher to suggest reading material for use at home.
Help your child locate materials that are needed in class. Remember the public library.
Help your child work out a good study schedule. Two shorter study periods are better than one lengthy session.
Allow time for other worthwhile after-school activities.
Go over homework with your child to see that it is carefully done -- and make encouraging comments.
If your child is having difficulty with his schoolwork, ask the teacher how you can help.
Watch educational programs with your child and help him to understand what he is seeing.
Provide opportunity to learn from experiences outside the classroom.
Most of all enjoy helping your child learn!
CONFERENCES
Close communication between parents and teachers is essential for student success. We encourage parents to work closely with teachers offering support and input to help students learn to their highest potential.
Both parents and teachers are encouraged to schedule conferences. Conferences are not only needed to resolve problems or concerns but also to hear about successes. There is no better way to get to know your child's teacher than on a one on one basis.
Parents may make an appointment for a conference by leaving a message on the teacher's voice mail. Please feel free to contact the school office at 397-1150 and the office staff will assist you in reaching the teacher's voicemail. Parents may also contact the teacher for a conference by either e-mail or a written note. A time can be arranged for you to meet with the teacher during the teacher's conference period or after school.
SCHOOL ADVISORY TEAM
Galm has a School Advisory Team (SAT), comprised of administrators, campus staff, parents and community representatives that meet four (4) times during the school year. The SAT reviews performance of all students, determines goals and strategies, and ensures that strategies are implemented and adjusted to improve student achievement keeping in mind the following:
