Introduction

Attendance at Ocean Parks has dramatically decreased over the years, which is affecting the everyday upkeep of the mammals.  Therefore the issue of setting mammals free or encouraging patrons to the park has become vital to the existence of the ocean park.

Task

In this Web Quest, you will be a part of a group of marine mammal scientists who are experts on adaptations and behaviors of marine mammals. You have been hired by an ocean park that is on the verge of bankruptcy, to develop a brochure that encourages visitors to come to the park.  The brochure must attract visitors so that the mammals can remain at the park.

Process

      Your teacher will assign you a job from the links below.  Each link lists your responsibilities for that particular job. You will have approximately 7 days to complete your task as a group. The resources that you will use for this project consist of a hot list, library resources, and CD ROMs. Using, Microsoft Word, each group will use the information gathered to create a flyer.  This information will than be used to create a class brochure.

The flyer must consist of the following:

Must focus on answering these questions/statements:

·      Describe your ocean mammal.

·      Include a graphic of your particular ocean mammal. 

·      Where does your ocean mammal live?

·      What is special about your ocean mammal?

·      Do humans have a positive or negative impact on your ocean mammal? 

·      Would the world be a better place without your animal? Why or Why not?

Use the hot list as a resource and rubric as a guide to complete your project.

Now as a class you will develop your brochure using the group flyers.

Conclusion

You have had the opportunity to explore information about ocean mammals.  By saving the park you have played an important role in ensuring that ocean mammals continue to thrive.  We hope you recognize how each mammal plays an important part in our environment.  In participating in this web quest you should have gained a better understanding of how ocean mammals coexist with humans.
