Task Force 9: Conglomerate Stew
Procedures:
Collect an assortment of sediment. Find some mud or fine silty soil, some sand, a couple of pebbles, clay, spider lint, and other assorted sediments. Ask your teacher where to get these materials. Place them in the 2 liter pop bottle. You should have enough to fill up a third of the bottle.
With the collection of sediment now in the bottom of the bottle fill the bottle with water and screw on the cap.
Shake vigorously. This will suspend the sediment in the water. Set the bottle on the table and allow it to stand undisturbed for 15 minutes. Observe the clarity of the water in the bottle at one-minute intervals.
After the sediment has settled, measure, in centimeters, the height of each visible layer. Record your measurements and draw your findings in the space to the right. Use the symbols depicted on the chart to differentiate the layers.
