Texas Citizenship/Government Sampler

Texas Symbols

Introduction: Where do you live? -- in a house (or apartment or mobile home), in a town or city, in a state.  And, what state might that be?  (No, not the state of confusion.)  The great state of Texas!  Every state has symbols which represent that state--things that immediately bring to mind that state when we see them or hear them.  Texas has many symbols and it is important to understand what these symbols mean. In this subject sampler, we are going to look at three symbols, the flag, the pledge to the flag and the state song.
Note:  Work this sampler with a partner.  You will take turns searching for the answers and recording your answers. Be sure to answer in complete sentences.  As you work through this sampler, be sure to do the activities as they appear.
Questions:
What does the state flag look like?
What does each part of the flag signify?
What is the state pledge to the flag?
What is the state song?
The answers to these questions can be found in the Texas State Library.

Activities:
1.
Make up a song using the words to the state pledge set to the  tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," "Mary Had A Little Lamb,"  "Frere Jacques,"  or "Jingle Bells."  Perform your song for class.
 2.
Memorize the state song.  Practice with the class.
3.
Draw, color, or otherwise create a Texas flag.  Copy the pledge onto the same paper or attach it to the flag.

Citizenship

Introduction:  Citizenship and government--big words that we hear every day, but do we really know what they mean? We talk a lot about being a "good citizen," but what does that mean?  In this sampler, we will define these terms and explain a little bit about how the state government works and how citizens work with government.  You may be surprised at how interesting this subject can be when you begin to understand how this affects your everyday life.  Have fun as you do your searches.
