Attendance, Arrival, and Dismissal Information
Upon arrival, students report to the gym. First bell rings at 7:35 and t he tardy bell rings at 7:45 a.m. Your child will need to come to the office to get a tardy slip if he/she is not in the classroom by 7:45 a.m. If your child arrives after 9:00 a.m., they will be considered absent unless they have a written doctor's excuse. All notes must include the date, name of the child, the date of absence(s), the specific reason for the absence, and the parent’s/guardian’s signature. Please make sure that you sign your child in at the office.
Classes are dismissed at 2:45 p.m. Students must be picked up before 3:10 p.m. at the front entrance.

Dismissal: If your child is to go home other than his/her usual way, we ask that you send a note to the teacher, or that you call the office as early in the day as possible so that we may get the message to your child and his/her teacher. The office cannot guarantee that messages received at 2:25 p.m. or later will reach your child in time to change the way he/she goes home. If the change is permanent, it must be sent to the school in writing by the next day.

What do I do when I want to pick up my child early from school?
Parents must go directly to the office to sign the child out. The office staff will then call for the student. Students will only be released to parents/guardians with the proper identification. If someone else other the parent/guardian is going to sign out the child during the instructional day, we ask that the parent notify the school in writing or contact the school office as soon as possible. The person picking the child up will need proper identification.

Can I request a teacher for my child?
Classes are built with a balance. There is collaboration between the principal and classroom teachers to ensure such a balance is achieved for each classroom at Valley Hi. It is not desirable for a child to be in a class predominately boys, girls, fast, slow, aggressive, quiet, or in a class which is skewed along any of the many important human characteristics. It is our desire that each classroom have diversity.
Requesting particular teachers can cause an unbalanced class. If one request is honored, then all requests need to be honored setting an unrealistic expectation. In order to maximize children’s learning, it is essential that equitable, compatible, balanced classes be assembled. Requesting particular teachers cannot be honored. Parents are invited to write a letter describing any learning characteristics about their child. Letters need to be submitted to the principal by May 31st for the following school year.

Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value
The Texas Department of Agriculture put new policies in place to limit snack foods in elementary schools. The policy states "An elementary school may not serve or provide access for students to Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value any time, anywhere on school premises during the school day."

Specifically, elementary students may not have carbonated drinks at school or on a field trip during the school hours. Also banned are most kinds of candy, gum and popsicles (unless containing fruit juice or milk). This will not affect activities after the school day or on weekends. Also not affected are individual meals sent from home to be consumed by the student and not shared with others.
