Phase 1

Step 1: Team and Librarian brainstorm questions on Earth Science; Each team member selects a "Why" or "How" question to research.

Step 2: Team and Librarian model accessing NISD-approved online databases and finding print (book) information using the JG Library Student Web Page which includes WebCat (iBistro) and more.

Step 3: Each pair team member logs onto two computers, side by side, and each person launches
a. the campus the Power Point, and saves a set of Power Point slides using the name of the teacher, the team number (e.g. 1a and 1b).

Step 4:
Task a. Open iBistro > Find it Fast > Science > Earth. Cite 5-10 sources that look promising (list title, call number, author, publication date). Find these books and bring them back to the research table.

Task b:
b. Open the following sites that are recommended by Encyclopedia Britannica online and rank them for their usefulness (5 = high, 3 = OK, 1 = not useful)

Earthquakes

Planet Earth

Hall of Planet Earth

NASA's Globe Program

How Do Fossils Form (experiment)

Copy the URL of your top sites and paste them onto separate PPT slides, along with today's date.

Step 5: Return to the Research area and make bibliography cards 3-5 of the books that have been gathered their.

Go back to the computers, and make bibliography 3-5 slides for these citations..

Step 6: SAVE YOUR POWERPOINT ON THE G DRIVE UNDER LIBRARY PROJECTS. This is not your finished product -- it is simply the "container" or planning guide so that you can start the next phase of your research.

Phase 2

Now that you have your resources lined up, you are ready to start organizing your information. Your librarian will show you a quick way to paraphrase a key paragraph. And where will you find those key paragraphs?

In WORLD BOOK, use the key word "EARTH" and select topics from the side bar (left-hand side).

In BRITANNICA, under Explore Topics, select Science.
Next, select Earth Science.

Collecting your information will take time. Plan to gather print and online information, and then to put it into a form for presenting. The form could be a PowerPoint,, a PhotoStory, and Inspiration Map, a poster, an annotated diagram, or anything else your teacher has approved. You can get help on this any time your teacher arranges for you to come to the library, and also, in the computer lab.

Happy researching!.
