Beverly McCarthy wins one of the coveted Siemens Awards

When the Third International Mathematics and Science study showed that U.S. high school students did not compare favorably with those of other nations in science and mathematics education, one group stood out as a shining exception - students who had taken The College Board's Advanced Placement Program ® (AP) calculus and physics courses. These students performed better than other U.S. 12th graders who had taken advanced mathematics and physics during high school, and they were competitive with the best mathematics and science students in the world. The Siemens Foundation is building on this success with the Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement for teachers. Teachers who have made significant contributions receive special award recognition, as do schools that demonstrate notable improvement in AP enrollment and performance.

There are 18 awards given to (full-time) teachers for exemplary teaching and enthusiastic dedication to both students and subject. Twelve teachers, two in each of the College Board's six regions, are selected for their commitment to students and the AP Program. Six additional teachers, one in each region, are recognized from schools that have a substantial under-represented minority student population. Each teacher receives $1,000 and a plaque.

This year Beverly McCarthy, Calculus AP teacher, has been honoured with a Seimens Award. Again, the faculty at Health Careers High School shows everyone that we have the best faculty in the district or perhaps even the country???
