It is important for you to decide your education and career goals and to determine which colleges can help you the most. The first step in selecting a college is to realize that you are looking for a good match with yourself. The more you can personalize your college search, the more likely it is that you will find the right school for you. Choose a school that suits you.

5 Steps to Finding your Perfect College/University


1. Start by making a realistic assessment of who you are as a student

Make good grades Get into Medical/Law School

What do I want to major in? (List up to five choices separated by commas)

Which colleges offer a respected program in my major? Check out some of these links to find colleges that offer the degree programs that you are interested in. List 10-15 colleges/universities separated by commas.

What other activities am I interested in? Check out the websites of the colleges you selected. List a few organizations, athletics, or activities that interest you (separated by commas).

2. Determine what you are looking for in a college.

Ask yourself some questions about your ideal school. Consider the following:

3. Gather information about the colleges that interest you.

Most college websites give general information about the school, admission requirements, the majors offered, a map, and other general information. Some websites may have a virtual campus tour.

Attend a local College Night.
Talk to students and alumni of the college.

4. Now is the time to compare all information. Narrow your list down to seven-ten schools that really interest you.

Are your grades and test scores high enough for you to be a competitive applicant at the institutions you selected? Yes No

5. Narrow your list even more. Choose four-six schools from your original list that meet your goals/needs.
