Policies are the rules that will make our library and information center work more efficiently for students, teachers and staff. Listed below are some common policies questions that reflect the expectations of the library and administrative staff.
1. What type of behavior is expected in the HCHS library?
Be courteous and kind regardless of the type of day you are having or have had in the recent past. Please enjoy the library and its facilities but remember that being courteous and kind is a priority. There may be classes in progress or students studying who need a quiet environment and we ask that you respect that possibility.
2. I went to the library and the staff told me that I could not stay. Why?
Because of space limitations, we will monitor the number of students in the library. If no seating is available, you may be asked to return to class and visit the library at a later time. In the event that a class is in session in the library, the class will have first priority to the computers. One computer will be reserved for students utilizing the library with a small group or individually.
3. What's the deal with having to have a pass? Why do I have to sign in electronically whenever I come to the library?
Your safety is important to us and knowing where our students are throughout the day ensures this safety. Please be sure to have a lime green library pass for visiting the library during a core class (English, math, International Languages, etc.), a blue study hall pass if visiting during study hall, and a laminated library pass from the administration on duty if you visit during lunch. You will be asked to to produce your pass when you arrive in the library. Registering your visit electronically will ensure that there is a record of your visit to the library.
4. I am REALLY hungry and like to bring my lunch or snacks to the library to eat while I am relaxing or working on a project. Why can't I bring food or drink into the library? And, by the way, what's wrong with chewing gum?
Although we are an equal opportunity establishment, we do not particularly wish to share our space with roaches, ants or rodents. To avoid our having to banish these creatures with a hasty departure or a nasty execution, please do not bring food or drink into the library. As gum chewing often leads to not following policy #1, please dispose of gum before you enter.
5. I keep hearing about the Acceptable Use Policy everywhere I go...the computer labs, in my classes and now in the library. I want to be able to use the computers however I want. Why can't I?
The Acceptable Use Policy for the Northside Independent School District outlines the behavior students should exhibit when utilizing electronic resources. Again, this is an issue of safety as there are sites that are not appropriate for students or may lead to problems for them or their classmates. Students are expected to follow the same policies that are presented in computer courses and the same discipline action will be followed for students who do not follow the AUP. The consequences may include loss of computer privileges in the library.
