Copying and Pasting

Copy/Paste

Copying and pasting provides an easy way to copy portions of text from a Web page to a word processing document, but it is extremely important to be careful not to plagiarize information.

WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?

"Plagiarism is using others' ideas and words without clearly acknowledging the source of that information." When you use ideas or quote from a book, article, or a website, you must cite the source. The same rules also apply to any pictures or graphics taken from books, articles, or the Web. More information on citing sources is in the Sources section of this tutorial.

HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM?

Put in quotations everything that comes directly from the text especially when taking notes.
Paraphrase, but be sure you are not just rearranging or replacing a few words.
Check your paraphrase against the original text to be sure you have not accidentally used the same phrases or words, and that the information is accurate.

When in doubt, give credit for something somebody said, wrote, emailed or drew.
