Hobby History

William P. Hobby Middle School opened in 1971 as part of a rapidly expanding Northside ISD. The school was originally designed for the open classroom concept and later modified into a more traditional school building. Hobby sits on a wooded site at the corner of Vance Jackson and Huebner. Our campus has an outdoor classroom and two patio areas for faculty and students to enjoy.

In keeping with the Northside Independent School District tradition of naming middle schools after Texas governors and notable Texans, Hobby Middle School was named after Governor William Pettus Hobby. Governor Hobby was known as the "Tactful Texan". In September of 1917, William P. Hobby became Governor of Texas. He succeeded impeached Governor Ferguson and later was elected by a record majority to serve from 1918 to 1921. During his term of office, Governor Hobby took charge of wartime responsibility, sponsored the first "tidelands" law and "right-to-work" legislation, and made history with his education proposals.

William P. Hobby died on June 7, 1964 . History will some day record that William Pettus Hobby was one of the truly eminent governors of Texas .

Joined with Knowledge,
Guarantee we fly as one!
We show respect for what surrounds us
We know that trust builds friendships stong!
Hobby Hawks fly with power, soar high!
Spread your wings, own the sky,
Fly with Pride!
