Introduction
The objective of this treasure hunt is to deepen your understanding of the rights protected by the First Amendment.  Use the Internet resources to answer the 10 questions that follow. When you have finished, answer the Big Question that asks you to combine a lot of what you learned through the treasure hunt into a "big picture."


Questions

  1. What types of situations are protected by the right to speak?
  2. How is the freedom of speech limited?
  3. What laws regulate our freedom to "establish" a religion?
  4. How do the laws protect people from dangerous religious groups?
  5. How could these laws infringe on, or interfere with, our right to practice a religion?
  6. Explain what happened in one court case dealing with our right to petition the government.
  7. Describe one situation where people have protested against the government.
  8. How do other countries handle freedom of speech, religion, and assembly?
